Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I listened to this while washing my dishes, so imagine the absolute panic that took over when I looked over and saw the bright green spot in your arm πŸ˜‚ I thought my toddler broke the TV because she pokes it in that spot ALL. THE. TIME. πŸ˜‚ Goodness gracious, I got STRESSED.

Amazing information as always. I'm not a new gardener, but I still always listen to your seed starting videos because each time I catch something new.

  2. Good morning Roots and refuge! So the Baccto soil….. I'm in Camden, SC …where do you find it in bulk. I'm trying to find it so I'm not paying a fortune. I was using a thousand (JK! but it sure felt like it πŸ€ͺπŸ™ƒ)seed starting mix bags and then last year I switched to making my own starting mix (per recipe online 😊) and I just don't feel like they grew as well. Thank you 😁

  3. IMO when it comes to seed starting trays and cups:
I'm a boy of little money and try to do it spending as little money as possible….
But if you can get long lasting equipment that has been designed through experience and lasts a long time, you are better off buying those.
Cheap options will be a reoccurring frustration whenever planting time comes. They will not be the perfected convenience of professional products.
There may come times when the ideal product is unavailable in a person's location or outside his/her budget range.
I have heard nothing but good reports of Bootstrap Farmer products and they have a tray I think I want. But, due to shipping costs, It falls outside my budget. So I'm stuck still playing with found materials that I can modify into a tray.

  4. Have you herd that purple bock choy. Take bug pressure of cabbage family πŸ€”β€οΈπŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ‘

  5. A couple of years ago I started using plastic straws I had sitting around as plant labels for seed starts and still use the same ones.

  6. For everybody: In my small garden, every year I try to grow the veggies I want to eat. But some do great and others fail to thrive. I need advice. Or anybody else having these same issues?
    2 questions:

QUESTION 1 (for everybody): I've had a heck of a time growing herbs, for example, except for some dill in late summer and catnip, if that counts as an herb. Our soil here is clay but I usually remove some of it & fill the hole mostly with store-bought compost, top soil, & peat moss. I suspect I should do better with that. I have tested the pH, and it is always within the limits.

QUESTION 2: Russian kale does great here, but dinosaur Lacinato kale fails to thrive. Any ideas about what I need to change? Full sun, I water daily by hand when soil dries if no rain. Do I need to water more deeply and maybe less often, if I do?

The good news: Neighborhood cats love hanging out in my yard since the catnip started growing. They helped spread it a bit, too. So far, it's NOT taking over, and the cats help keep the pest population down around my retaining wall. The cats will tolerate my dogs as long as I grow catnip.

  7. I use sterile mix cuz i grow all my seeds indoors in my livingroom. And last year i didnt use that potting mix and i had so many bugs and what i think were fruitflies in my house.

  8. I cover my grow lights (shop lights) in my house with a cheap mylar blanket (a couple dollars), since it reflects / amplifies the light and protects our eyes.

  9. So many comments on here about fungus gnats!!! Can we talk about mosquito bits?!? Game changer for me for inside pants and for seed starting! Y'all search here on you tube, tons of good info on how to soak bits and a good watering routine with that water.

  10. This was so incredibly helpful, explained for people like me who need step by step instruction. And here I thought I knew what I was doing with my BS in Biology and all! Took notes and shared with pals, it’s a must watch. THANK YOU! Donna Jean in New England, zones 6a MA and 5a NH.

  11. FYI, they have reusable aluminum solo cups now. Can still drill a hole in the bottom but they will last super long since they don't rust.

  12. I've saved most of all my seeds from previous yrs with success after watching your videos (except for buying heirlooms seeds from my favorite small town hardware store –and dollar general has seeds in packets cheap at the end of summer). Starting beet seeds in a container in the greenhouse is at the top of my list now. i canned beets for yrs before & everyone misses them and I do too. Canning sweet pickles (recipe handed down from my family in law) is coming too. I still have onions, brussel sprouts, and cabbage collards growing.
I'm feeling panicky. Trying to give it to God and praying for all of us that God gives us a beautiful and flourishing spring and summer gardens full of beautiful fruits and vegetables. πŸ’œ
