I think I remember reading about the what is the meaning of the Prawn in the classic Manga Oishinbo. Prawn is for long life, so that you can live till your back is like a prawn or something.

Looks like the Danchi is about the same as our HDB, only unfortunate thing is we are not able to see inside the apartment itself… That would be so cool!

Hi! Are you singaporean guys interested in japanese Danchi? I’m japanese and living in Danchi in Tokyo! I will introduce our lovely Danchi in Tokyo!
In Tokyo we have 2 different Danchi. One is the same as the Video for low pay. Other one is for everybody but you must prove that you have income four times the rent monthly. You can find the last one as a really luxury Danchi like a luxury apartment.
I’m living Danchi with 4 times something but not luxury. We have very much advantage! Our building is very strong to earthquake, we have communication each other, and most important things (for me😊) is very international! I feel so cozy to see and to communicate with young residents from oversee!

You mentioned about Japan has rental public housing. You are actually comparing with HDB ownership rather than the rental price. Do you know that in Singapore also rental HDB which is around $100 per month. It is a 2 room flat. Go and check it out. It really limited.
In Japan, public housing means housing for the lower income earners to rent. With HDB, you can buy a 99 years lease and own the flat for that duration. Moreover, it can be freely sold in the open market with a gain. For later retirement needs, the remaining lease can be used. The best deal in the world.
As a Singaporean working as a real estate broker in japan I do agree 団地 are good for rentals but it is kind of difficult for say students to get to rent one sadly.

No lift is great for fitness but can be tough if you live above 5 floors

There are actually public rental flats for low-income families in Singapore. They are usually smaller than your average HDB flats consisting of one or two-room flats. I've heard that there are 3-room rental flats as well but I've never actually seen one before. The household income ceiling for these flats is quite low so the majority of Singaporeans will not be able to qualify because our government actually encourages people to purchase their own flats rather than rent. Rental prices of these flats are significantly cheaper than our Japanese counterparts and they still do provide amenities like elevators because the majority of residents who live in these flats are senior citizens so you can't really expect them to climb the stairs (I feel really bad for the senior citizens in Japan 😥). You should check out these HDB rental flats.

We have HDB rental flat too but very small room and very cheap but the requirements are very strict.
