Growing Citrus in Missouri?

People often can’t believe that we are growing nearly 20 different citrus varieties at Baker Creek’s southern Missouri farm. But it’s true! Come along for a peek inside the citrus greenhouses and a look at what we’ve learned about growing them!

  1. My dream come true to have many trees. I have a lime and Yuzu in a pot. They both surprisingly produce. I see you are planting in soil do you heat the soil or just the air. I am in Iowa.

  2. How do you pollinate them? By hand? Or do they manage themselves? I thought bees didn’t do well in Greenhouses. They are beautiful trees, and hopefully can expand the range.

  3. Recently saw plenty of orange trees in Phoenix. So happy to see how they are growing here in Missouri. Great job.

  4. I love it! I would love to grow more tropical plants in a greenhouse, especially avocados 🥑 It would be a wonderful sight to see! I'm in SW MO. I should go visit you at Baker Creek and see this first hand.

  5. We have lemons in pots in TN.
    They fruit in winter.

They are out in spring summer n autumn but winter they have plastic over them with heat lights n they do fine. Even with the freezing temperatures n the greenhouse got below freezing.

Do you guys pick all the oranges off at a certain time? Or do you use them as you go?

You have beautiful trees n fruit! Just lovely n the smell of the blossoms is the best smell ever. I never dreamed a lemon blossom could smell so good.

  6. I wonder how they did through the polar Siberian front that came through in December? The wind was ridiculous, but surely they’re propane heaters kept it warm enough.

  7. This is amazing! I live in Washington state on the west side, and citrus isn’t something you see over here due to the chilly and damp spring. I have three Meyers lemon citrus trees about three years old. Two are producing lemons just fine but one is turning yellow no matter what I do. I did keep citrus fertilizer on it through its primary growing season. No sign of bugs or disease. I think it’s some kind of deficiency but not sure of what. Any ideas?

  8. Awesome that you guys are growing so many citrus varieties. Where did you source you dekopon trees? I've been wanting one, but don't know where to get one.

  9. Love Baker creek–RareSeeds! There is a guy in Alliance, NE who has been growing citrus in his greenhouse for years. I hope to be able to stop by Baker Creek on a trip to NE from TN. Can't wait!!!

  10. Wow! I have tropical fruit trees I bring indoors every Fall. They are getting large and heavy to move. It is time for us to get a greenhouse.

  11. I'm loving the 'Compost me when I die' hoodie!! Human composting needs to become more widespread, just became legal in Ohio!! I'd much rather nourish the Earth and give back than to be kept semi-preserved for a few more years and kill off insects, bacteria, mycelia, and whatever else would want to use what's left of me from the moment I expire.
On a lighter note, I just put up a new greenhouse, yet I'm too afraid to move my lemon and lime out just yet.

  12. Such beautiful trees! I am in Florida and healthy citrus trees are hard to find, sadly. I heard you say you provide organic fertilizer, but I would like to know how you are taking care of the soul microbiota. Carbon inputs? Thank you for sharing this!

  13. I have lemon and lime trees in Nebraska northern I love them I bring then in every winter just …be safer for now..thankyou
