Why Zanzibar had a Bloody Revolution in 1964

On the night of January 12, 1964 a band of some 300 people violently seized the Island of Unguja in what became known as the Zanzibar Revolution of 1964. This group was ostensibly led by a little known man named John Okello, who had lived on Pemba Island, having come to the Islands some years earlier from Uganda.

  1. Congrats for this amazing content. Zanzibar revolution has many versions that we Tanzanians don't know which one is true. But for one to understand he must start in 1963 when ASP(indigenous party) lost the election to ZNP & ZPPP ( pro Arabic parties) which won majority seats to form a government. ASP leaders refused to accept defeat though it is said majority of people who voted for them were from Tanganyika who were smuggled into Zanzibar during the night.

Most Zanzibaris have some relations with the Arabs through marriages, work etc which made it hard for them to rebel against Arabs because they see them as relatives. This is where okello and co come into the picture, they had nothing to lose and in case things went south they would be the one to take a fall.

The day the revolution happened all leaders of ASP & Umma parties were in Tanganyika which I don't think is a coincidence. Even when the sultan requested help from Nyerere he never picked up the phone, he knew everything. Without the help from Tanganyika the revolution would never have succeeded.

Nyerere called all members of revolutionary council including Okello to Dar es salaam. Immediately after arriving Okello was put in another plane and deported to Uganda. This is the version of the revolution which I consider to be at least 70% true.

Rumor has it that members of the revolutionary council took an oath to carry the secrets of what really happened to their graves. We will never know the truth.

  2. "Give mercy to virgins when raping" the irony in that statement as mind blowing

  3. Please can you make a video about Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Former Nigerian Head of State and also another video on the Nigerian civil war

  4. The growth of this channel, both in depth of content and production values, has been wonderful to watch.

  5. Was John Okello from Udanga a former slave of Arabs in Zanzibar and so he retaliated?

Why the British Government (Christian) supported Tanganyika under Julius Nyerere (Christian), Kenya under Jomo Kenya (Christian) and Uganda under Milton Obote (Christian) but refused to support Zanzibar under Muhammed Shamte (Muslim) when they all wanted in the same month of January?😂😂

  6. This is the main problem of people like this who made documentaries without reading the history of Zanzibar let alone the East Africa. The nation to introduce slave trade was the Portuguese, who killed, destroyed towns and villages and took Africans as slaves, the second were the British, the Germans and the Frech. These three pioneers of slave trade kept on campaigning as they were stopping the slavery, but actually they wanted only them to do this dirty business,as it was the most profitable business.Dont rush to writing lies. The western history books don't mention these facts. They robbed the African natural resources for centuries starting with the Portuguese. I urge you read other books before spreading lies against the Arabs which is the only nations that intermarried with the Africans. Many Islanders found Znz to be their safe havens, they went there for a living, including Karume and others from Comoro. The census revealed that two thirds of the slaves were owned by the Shirazis.Indian too were the biggest slave traders. Why only pointing at the Arabs.Thanx to the president Museveni of Uganda who said,it were the Africans who sold their fellow Africans to the Africans to be slaved. Be fair and just in your documentary and stop spreading lies.

  7. What do u expect from a person likes this who is narrating the history of zanzibar which him self taught , raised and brain wash by wazungus

  8. I am 50 yrs old Zanzibari man. I don't have any trace of Arab blood, nor Asian blood.
However, it was not about Arabs and Africans, but it was merely about politics and political parties.
My father was imprisoned just because he was in ZNP party.
The revolution and killings was not done by the Zanzibaris themselves, but rather was done by Tanganyika military by the order of Nyerere helping ASP. That is why Karume did not have any other choice but to to agree the union.
Sultan Barghash of Zanzibar was the one who abolished slavery on June 1873, not the British.

  9. It will never do us good to rape and kill. This is not going to help us, in the future leaders must be very conservative and punish by death rape and acts unbecoming of an African. African men are fathers of humanity, kill only your enemy, educate all others.

  10. INTRODUCTION
When the former Tanzanian President Julius Kambarage Nyerere made the above address to his National Assembly that "the union between Zanzibar and Tanganyika is the most misunderstood aspects of Tanzanian's political development" proved that he is the only Tanzanian who knows "the manner and the implications of the union" after British colonialism in East Africa.

During the British colonialism, Zanzibar was the only intellectual center for Islamization of East African countries under the Zanzibar Sultanate. The Gofu and the Barza Mosques allowed students from the East African countries for the Islamic education. The Zanzibar Muslim Academy also offered the greatest hope for the vibrancy of Islam in East Africa. Nyerere, a devout Catholic saw that the Islamic Zanzibar state, a threat to Christianity. He masterminded a clandestine movement for the so called Zanzibar Revolution under the leadership of John Okello, a radical Christian from Uganda. It was not only a prelude to the creation of Tanzania, but a continuation of crusade against Islam and extension of Christian colonialism.

  11. What can we learn from history when we see the Sultans of Zanzibar having both Arab and African features?

  12. Why can educated africabs discuss swahili civilization which was desyroyef by european invasion without introducing fake missionary tales and illustrations to colour propaganda…
Africa is stuck in.neo clonial state due to this annomally

  13. Thanks for this doco on the Zanzibar Revolution. Good background to the ethnic tensions between African and Arabs. While the Arabs discriminated against the Africans, the subsequent massacre was similar to the Rwandan Genocide. The targeting of Arabs and Asians in Zanzibar also had similarities to the expulsion of Indians from Uganda. Agree that the killings of Arabs and Asians during the Zanzibar Revolution created a brain drain that hurt the islands’ social and economic development.
