Container Gardening

A look back and a look forward – my garden 2022 into 2023

I started 2022 with a detailed plan for my seed sowing and succession planting. It didn’t all go to plan, but I had lots of fun, loads of great vegetable harvests, a greenhouse full of tomatoes, peppers and aubergines and some gorgeous flower beds.
I can’t wait to start the growing seasons for 2023

  1. Thanks for the tour and inspiration! I'm planning to change up my backyard garden to expand my main no dig bed along with pots in 2023. I've been having the same problem with my strawberries. What strawberries I did get were gobbled up by my dogs when I had my back turned 😐 🤨🤣

  2. Always enjoy your videos and learn a lot. Figs are usually ready when they start to droop and good luck with the upcoming garden year.

  3. Bugger now I have mahnamana stuck in my head! 🤣
Love your gardens, all so beautiful, just like you both 💚

  4. Interesting space in your backyard. Its small compared to mine in the US, but you have a lot packed in there. It will take a lot of work to get as organized as you are. Im only going into my 5th year of gardening. This year I am going to add 4-6 large tote sip's. I have already drawn out the layout and lots of work left to do. Good luck and I will watch how you progress.

  5. Yeah, more flower talk! I bought more herb seeds this year to create more to make tinctures and teas. But the flowers that I can grow for the same uses is exciting. I love your flowers and hope to grow along with you.

  6. Hi, I found you today, and I’m excited to compare growing at different ends of the country, what we grow and the differences in harvest times. I love Charles Dowding, he is so knowledgeable.
Excited to follow you and grow things with you. Thanks for the onion seed planting on Boxing Day tip; I’m always late planting, so I’ll get straight on to those 😁
    Thanks, Amanda

  7. I've had the same results trying to grow strawberries in channel type beds and smaller raised bed style planters. I am going to go with a Birdies planter like our certain Aussie gardener uses!

  8. Grow Lassie grow! I love your garden! There is nothing better than salt air to cleanse your soul! I love Scotland! My children are “Scotch and Water” as their Da was from Glasgow.

  9. Hi Eli, Just wondering if there is anything that you cannot grow being near the sea? I am 1 minute away from the beach and would like to see if anything is just not possible with the salty air. I only grew my tomatoes outside last year (my first year) and got absolutely loads, I still have about 10 KG in the freezer.. My garden is north facing but is 80% sun all day. Happy New Year to you both.

  10. I grew up in Scotland and I never knew there could be rules about not growing veg in your front garden! I find that crazy, to be honest. Here in Germany (land of rules!) I'm also clueless, but I live in the country, my house is on its own, it's farms all around, and my front garden gets some good sun, so I've got veggie beds in it. Nobody has told me I can't – and believe me they would – so it must be ok here!

I need more flowers for the pollinators but I don't know what… I'll have to look in my local supermarket seeds section when it turns up about February…

  11. I might have to check what our council rules are about our front yard… I've only got fruit trees planted there (though I did grow snow peas too)… it's mostly for my flower (attempts). My Lilium's bloomed in time for Christmas which was lovely… my Gladioli are starting to open up now and my dwarf sunflowers look like they are doing ok. I'm attempt to grow dhalia's from seed but I think they may succumb to slugs (will have to try letting them grow longer in the greenhouse).
Lovely tour as always (love our clam your office seems too). I am planning on upping my compost game this year though… I've noticed a lot of my soil is pretty dry not far under the surface even after watering. I have a local (25mins away) supply of free horse manure so that should help :D.

  12. Strawberries! I grew them last year in a raised bed. They did quite well. Unfortunately the squirrels bit through the netting and ate every single one before we could pick them 😢 This year, I am going to build a frame and cover it in chicken wire. Hopefully they wont bite through the wire. If they do, I may have revert to hanging baskets. However, I didn’t get as good a crop with those. Strangely they didn’t bother with the raspberries.

  13. I love these videos 🙂 those figs should be ‘the next crop’ I believe it’s good theyre small now as they might make it through the winter safely 🙂 Brown turkey fig is yummy I have one outside and am trying to make more I love when they turn a brown purplish colour they’re so pretty 🙂

  14. I'm watching you as I'm sorting through my seeds. I love flowers and veg. The garden outside our farmhouse is usually full of buzzles as I call them! I've decided this year to grow for quality rather than quantity. I usually sow far too much and the pricking out drives me crazy. I'm so looking forward to next weeks vlog, it should help me get my head clear 🤣 Happy Gardening year ahead.

  15. I grew dwarf, determinate, tumbling and basket tomatoes last year in my polytunnel. What a disaster it was… most of them split with the humidity and got slugs and all sort of beasties living in the plants (first time I've ever seen that amount of slugs in the poly) They at least did good in containers outside for my friends and fam, so will do some for them again to go through those seeds.
I suggest up-potting your fruit trees this year. I've made many mistakes with those size of pots and just seeing your babies in the gives me anxiety haha
With the heat waves we've had, the large pots have been a life safer (I forget about things in containers and just focus on my raised beds tbh) After the second or third year, I tend to plant some shallow rooted annual flowers in the tree pots. My four year old cherry tree with the biggest tub was happy to host strawberries and bunny tail grass last year.
All my garlic has rotted with the rain (I forgot to drill extra drainage holes in my new containers…) I planted new one last week and at the very least, I'll get some tasty green garlic.

  16. Hello from California, Bay Area!! I’m new to the channel so I’ve been binge watching your videos. Very inspiring and entertaining. Your garden looks beautifully simple and great! keep the videos coming!!

  17. Just watching the first few of your videos the last couple of days.

My thoughts.. "I like this channel, dont ask me why… it's gardening (huge plus), and somehow even with a confusing walking around style… easy to follow (another plus).

Quote of this video "I hope I'm not chopping my head off". Out of context, whew….
