Garden Plans

Garden planning with SSE's education and engagement manager

Jeanine Scheffert, Seed Savers Exchange’s education and engagement manager, shares her process of planning her home garden and how she plans for seed saving.

Step One: Write down every crop and variety you want to see in your space. Jeanine doesn’t let reality get in her way at this stage.

Step Two: Enjoy browsing the Seed Savers Exchange seed catalog and the annual Yearbook (the print version of the Exchange where home gardeners share their beloved and unique seed varieties. Learn more at www.exchange.seedsavers.org.)

Step Three: Jeanine hand-draws her plot layout. There are varieties she knows well and grows year after year, and she also leaves space for new varieties.

Step Four: Be flexible and enjoy the process! Jeanine knows that she will probably change her plans up until she starts planting.

Tell us, how do you like to plan your garden?
