Early January Tour and Hand Feeding my Robin – My English Garden – 2023

I take you on a walk round my English Garden showing how the hydrangeas and azaleas are coping after the first frosts – have the new growth and buds been killed off? During the tour the robin comes to be fed with mealworms.
My English Garden is near the coast in North West England, 1/3 of an acre (including the house) Zone 9a with sandy soil.

  1. Happy New Year! Little Robin snatches those mealworms so quickly that you can’t really see it! He’s so sweet. Thanks for the update on your garden.

  2. Happy New Year! Lovely to see your garden at this time of the year. Isn't it great when everything starts to shoot and it never ceases to amaze me how robust our plants are after the snow and frosts. Does your little Robin ever land on your hand?

  4. Always appreciate your garden updates and helpful gardening information. I’ve used them and my garden has benefited from it. 😊Cheryl

  5. Nice video. Especially like your videos because you love birds and I do too. You always point them out in your garden and today's was so neat. The robin was so quick! And you have mealworms on hand for the birds. The English robin is so different in appearance from the robin in the U.S. It got me looking at my bird references. Zone 6a upstate NY.

  6. Hi Paul, Love this video showing the buds of your plants and feeding your beautiful robin! We live in the US and our robins are not as pretty or so tiny! Anyway, we are inexperienced gardeners and we had the question while watching your video: “what will happen to all those green buds if you have another hard freeze?” We’re hoping/guessing that the plants would generate them again either before Spring or in Spring? We live in Oklahoma (*I think we are a zone 7) and so we get unpredictable freezes and warmth in between. We see a see-saw of temperatures!

  8. Another enjoyable video
Think we "peaked", orr should that be troughed, at -14C up on our hill near the M6, and it's pretty much rained ever since. List of jobs is growing, just hope my young shrubs* develop as well as those in your garden

    * Our house has a large "garden", but it was just grass when we moved in. I'm slowly putting in borders beds and plants (along with trees) but am very much a novice so your videos are a great help in giving me ideas……..although I've now learnt (this will be my fourth year gardening) to tailor plants to our exposed Cumbrian environment…..learning curve lol

  9. What a lovely way to welcome the new year. Your garden is so beautiful even in the depths of winter. Winter gardens remind me of the Dicken's quote "…and see even here, upon a winter's day, how beautiful the shadows are!" I do love your relationship with that little bird. How wonderful it will he will eat out of your hand! 🐦

  10. Sweet little bird! All of your budding shrubs make me look forward to spring….. an early one, please!

  11. Thank you for an interesting tour, Paul. The robin is completely tame, "mine" is very timid. Actually, I haven't seen it since the heavy snowfall, it might not have survived it.

  12. Lovely walk around the garden. Wish I knew more about the Oak leaf hydrangea. I feel like those leaves just may hang in there.? Also, nice to see the supervisor stayed close flitting around 😊

  13. Thanks for this lovely tour of your winter garden Paul – it’s a great reminder that Spring is not too far away – fingers crossed! That robin has got you very well trained – how privileged we are to have these little friends 😊

  14. Wow your garden is beautiful even in Winter time thank you very much for sharing to us another wonderful garden tour.👍❤️🙏

  15. So enjoyable wandering the winter garden checking for new growth. Interesting re the different robins. Ours depart in winter. Our Chickadees always greet me in the morning when I put their feeder out. Always enjoy your videos Paul.

  16. Merry Christmas and happy new year Paul l love this tour in your garden to see the wonderful plants and this beautiful bird . Have anice day. 🎄

  17. Happy new year Paul. A nice tour, everything looking good. Nice to see buds, roll on spring. Love the robin, food on demand lol 🥰

  18. I think gardens are really interesting in winter. Seed heads are architectural and great for birds and other visitors. Hunting for new growth is quite satisfying.

  19. Happy New Year, Paul . Your garden looks lovely even in the midst of winter. Isn't that Robin gorgeous 😍, so tame, what a privilege.

  20. Hi paul. Nice to see your garden at rest. But lots of new life. We had severe frosts for over a week and knocked back a lot of plants. We had thunder and lightning today. The little robin is adorable. Look forward to being able to do some gardening shortly. Happy New year to you paul and all your family. god bless x

  21. Happy New Year from Las Vegas, You have an amazing Garden even though it is winter they still look lovely, Thanks for the tour Paul

  22. Hi Paul, I can't believe you have so many buds and so much activity in your dormant plants already. It is hardly fair that you have what seems to be two weeks of Winter!! 😉 and so mild. We had 5 months of cold weather this year. Back in jumpers here and we were sitting around the fire pit last night AND have had the heaters one week before Christmas. Not that I am complaining about the mild summer, the garden loves the cooler temperatures. OH NO, your Lorapetalum! This does not bode well, as I have put in some at the beginning of Spring and if yours doesn't like your two frosts, mine will be dead by late Autumn!! Happy New Year!
