January Allotment Tour – Tips For Raspberry Pruning

Join us for our January allotment tour with tips for raspberry pruning and a bit of winter harvesting too. The allotment in January is often cold and wet but if you get a few jobs done this time of the year then it will help with spring boing just around the corner. Pruning the raspberries is a great job to do over winter as both winter fruiting and summer fruiting canes need some attention to help them fruit next season.

We are also preparing the ground and using ground cover to help us stay ahead of the weeds.

Today we are harvesting Leeks, Beetroot, Carrots and Kale on the allotment. If you are new to allotments or gardening then try to plan for a winter harvest next year. Having a year round allotment does help with keeping you interested and giving you more reasons to visit the allotment or vegetable garden more often.

  1. Have you ever tried growing the round carrots?
I grew some a few years ago and they grew very well.
I had not had any success with the normal carrots in the same place previously.

  2. Glad you've reminded me.. I've gotta prune my raspberries if it ever stops raining here ☺

  3. I fug all my leeks out last weekend, and froze them for later use. I had a bit of leaf miner, and they were going a bit icky .
