8 Photography Goals 2023

8 Photography Goals for 2023

Happy New Year Everyone! I’m Mike from Rogala Photography. Today we’re going to talk about photography goals. I have a list of 10 possible goals you can set for 2023 to help you be successful in photography. I have 8 goals that vary depending on your experience level.

Before creating a photography goal, ask yourself what is the purpose of your photo. What is the purpose of your photography? Is it for business…do you want to get paid? Is it for art? Do you have this image in your head that you want all to see? Are you learning a new technique? Are you practicing to get better at something? Knowing the purpose of your photo will help you to set the right goals.

FYI…I apologize for not looking at the camera. I began using a separate monitor for recording and I tend to look at that and not the lens. Also, I am trying out actually writing out m scripts for these videos. I’m trying to stop saying “Um” all the time. It appeared to work but I will need to get a teleprompter so it will help me look at the lens. Again my apologies!

1. Experiment with different compositions and perspectives in your shots. If you normally shoot hand holding your camera, try a tripod. If you always shoot photos at eye level try lowering or raising your camera to get a different perspective.

2. Practice using natural light to enhance the mood and atmosphere in your photos. However, if you’ve only been using natural light, try using studio lights or a flash in your photos. Changing it help will help you to understand light and increase your experience.

3. This one is mainly for beginners. Learn about and try using different manual camera settings, such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This is called the Exposure Triangle and is the key to any good photo.

4. Take a photography class or workshop to learn new techniques and skills. We should always be students of our craft. Continuing to learn will just make us better. Plus it’s a great way to meet other photographers.

5. Visit new and unfamiliar locations to capture unique and interesting shots. Also, force yourself to ONLY photograph in “boring” places such as your backyard. This is related to number 2 and helping you expand your composition skills. It’s easy to create a good photo when your subject is beautiful like a sunset or landmark. Finding a composition in a “boring” location can lead to some of your best photos.

6. Collaborate with other photographers and models to create new and dynamic work. This is related to number 5 and taking a photography class. Meeting & working with other photographers is a great way to spark new ideas, learn about new locations and skills you have yet to experience.

7. Work on a personal photography project that stretches your abilities and pushes you to try new things. Now I wouldn’t used a paid or professional project for this one. Let’s say you normally are a portrait photographer but don’t have a lot of experience photographing landscapes. Go out and spend the day learning to compose and expose your favorite location into a beautiful landscape photo.

8. Regularly review and edit your photos to improve your editing skills and create a cohesive portfolio. Learning new editing skills is a MUST in today’s photography. With digital photos, the possibilities are endless in what you can create both in camera and after the photo is already created.

Well I hope you found these goals useful and that you are excited to try one or more of these. Remember to know the purpose of your photography before creating a goal.
