What are we going to do? Update on damaged garden. Severe weather again!

Taking a look at the garden in this new year to determine what I think I want to do as far as replanting or waiting for the spring. It just drives me crazy to think I might not have anything growing. So walk with me and I’ll tell you what I think I’m going to do starting today. Be sure to check out our link below for the harvest right freeze dryer. It’s such a great way to preserve food a simple, easy way that will last a very long time in your pantry. Let’s get going folks in this new year and encourage one another and pray for one another, and lift each other up.

  1. HAPPY NEW YEAR! We just moved to the DFW area a couple years ago and I'm still shocked by this weather.

  2. Jill, you "helped" convince me on one thing. I have been back and forth for at least 3 years, on whether I should get a freeze dryer. This challenge actually helped me to see, that it is "my" best option. I was thinking about the room for all of the canned goods, and freezer space…Everything that it takes to preserve food, plus the families preferences. I don't like canned meats. I don't like canned veggies. But, I am good with freeze dried. I really want to get a medium. But, the fact on that is…I probably don't need one that large. Even keeping a little is better in the long run!

  3. North east TX here. I'm planning to start my seeds soon a the layout of my garden this year. I want to plant new to me plants and expand my vegtable garden. I'm so excited!

  4. Your kale is amazing. All of my kale (including a Russian variety) is mush despite two layers of fleece row cover over a frame. The freeze was heartbreaking but educational. It taught me that variety matters as well as the adequacy of freeze protection. My Winter Density lettuce (under fleece row cover) did quite well while other lettuce varieties with similar protection were devastated. I agree that now is not too early to start planning the spring garden. I have in mind to invite some fellow gardeners I know for a garden planning party so we can share ideas and possibly combine some orders to lower costs.

  5. Love your channel. All the gardening and cooking . very informational. Sorry about the loss. Celery should be fine. Mine here ohio is outside dies back to the ground every winter then comes back. Only for 2 years it's a biannual. But maybe not this year time will tell 😊

  6. Getting ready to hunker down again in Powderly, TX. The really bad EF4 came within a 1/2 mile of our house in November, then sirens went off again in December but tornado was about 5 miles away. Looks like we might possibly get to see the inside of our shelter again in January! Ryan Hall is supposed to be live today as all this comes through. Anyway, Happy New Year? LOL. Stay safe everybody!

  7. No fireworks here this year, thankfully. Total losses in raised beds even though I covered my carrots carefully. 41 hours of below freezing temps just destroyed most of them. Planning to get some onions in the ground very soon. Dixon Dale usually recommends Jan 9 for my zip code. Potatoes in the ground by Valentine's Day. Other than that, I'm canning the freezers and working my soil and my spring planting schedule. 💖

  8. Was really trying to patiently wait for a new update on what might pull through and what is buckling under. LOL Tracking a few folks results…what they had planted where then how and what they used for protection. If I can learn a lesson or two from others, hopefully I can employ their techniques.
Good to see the wheels turning in what you're going to scrap and what you're gonna give a second chance.
And the challenge…what a hoot!! Didn't know it would turn into a competition. How fun. Albeit…this girl will do good just to compete with my own self to put up '365' jars this year. Yes, I tweaked it to 'jars' instead of meals.
Alright gal…pop that whip, pull that barge…get those beds cleared and those plants tidied up.
Quick question…what percentage do you think the barrels and compost contributed to helping through such horribly low temps? Jesus bless.

  9. My garlic survived the siberian cold front. I started vanilla, lemon and coffee extracts yesterday. Fermented saurkraut w/caraway seeds is being started today.

  10. My small garden is in my garage for the winter! I found out after a time my "mystery seeds" my wife gave me were cantaloupe, but died in the first frost. I also found out a plant I forgot to label was broccoli and it didn't survive the last frost we just had a few weeks ago. I'm putting up a greenhouse (sort of) in my garage to try to overwinter my peppers and other plants I had, and hope to start seeds pretty soon. Another 1st for me here in DeSoto doing all this, so it should be interesting come Springtime! Love your show and all you do. Our weather looks better than yours today. God Bless you and keep you safe!

  11. The wind has been crazy ferocious for hours here in the high desert. My garden is still rocking – so far! 🙏 blessings.

  12. The Chinese celery is a tough plant. There is a cabbage called Bravo that is supposed to be very heat tolerant. Heat tolerant broccoli varieties r Flash, Green Magic and Green Emperor

  13. Happy New Year! Australian Shepard slept in my lap and Bruiser stayed in shop. I raked leaves and put in compost pile. Lost three chickens since Christmas. I thought I lost my onions planted outside, but looks like they just got knocked back, 300 plants, Inside my spinach , chard, kale, arugula are coming back. My strawberries are doing good so far. Your plants look like they did better than mine. I did not add any heat during the freeze. I do like how you did 😊 inside tomatoes.

  14. Happy New Year to You and Your Family .. Yes another One is on its way . All we can do is Pray, stay Blessed and Safe. Ninette Bird- The Caribbean Wife- Cameron Tx

  15. Every thing in my garden got destroyed , except it looks like the garlic is okay .. So I will just wait till Spring or close to do anything , but will clean up my beds and do all the things required before I can plant .. I am a Newby at planting in Texas.. Ninette Bird- The Caribbean Wife- Bameron -Tx

  16. Unfortunately our worst winter month is yet to come. We have had more snow storms in February than others . Happy New Year .

  17. Your beets look the same as my beet bed over here in Texoma land. Also lost my kale and chard. But, like you, I've got plenty of carrots! POW, Ponder On Weather, letting us know to watch out for possibility of more severe COLD somewhere around the 16th.

  18. Jill I canned my turkey yesterday and got enough canned fo 36 meals. I think I did good . Plus had enough for a shut in from church who has 2 small children. God bless.

  19. I harvested some carrots this afternoon and the new seedlings that have sprouted are growing strong. My Chandler strawberries 🍓 started flowering last week and surprised me today by the abundance of blooms on each plant. Last year I only harvested about 5 strawberries from my 4 different varieties because it got hot so early here in south Texas last year.
My broccoli plants look just like yours but new green shoots popped out on Sunday 🥳 I think they might survive. Praying you have more survive than you expected 🥰

  20. I haven’t gotten any rain today over here. I did however enjoy the beautiful day and got to get out and start prepping garden beds. The bug is biting and like you, I am ready to get seeds started! I had a robin in my yard today so I think a lot of nature is confused about the weather. I know it’s not spring yet, but it’s coming soon!

  21. Hi from Tyler, I was driving from Ardmore OK to Tyler Texas from visiting my sister and her family. We left in the morning to be home before it got bad. My husband was at home with the dogs. We (the kiddos) missed the storm but there were limbs everywhere when I came into town. He said hail and high winds. We have electricity and water we are good. God is good.

  22. What a year it’s going to be! God must if heard your prayers. No storm went through here and Gainesville is east from you.
Can’t wait to see what this gardening year is gonna bring!!! God bless and keep on growing 🥦🥬🥒🌶🫑🍆🍅🍓🌽🥕🧄🧅🥔🍠

  23. Happy New Year to all. It’s heartbreaking to see some of your damaged veggies from the cold weather but your positive attitude is very infectious👍 I’m very much excited for your upcoming videos😊 God bless💕
