This time, our host visited Oita Station and surroundings, which is located in Oita City, Oita Prefecture.

Oita Station, which has the 4th largest daily number of commuters within JR Kyushu, is also a stop on the Limited Express Train “Sonic,” which runs from Hakata Station, the gateway to Kyushu, and passes through Kokura, Beppu and continues on towards Saiki in Oita. It is considered one of the fastest trains on JR Kyushu regular lines.

Using the thrifty and convenient Japan Rail Pass*, which can be used on train trips throughout Japan, on the Limited Express Train “Sonic” will take you from Hakata Station to Oita Station in just two hours.
*Conditions apply, such as being a foreign visitor to Japan on a short term stay visa.
See the official website for details.

AMU Plaza Oita, a multicomplex directly connected to the station, hosts a day’s worth of fun, including shopping, dining at restaurants, and watching movies, making it popular with both locals and tourists alike.

First, our host visited Cafe & Dining Minori Minoru on the 1st floor of AMU Plaza Oita.

Cafe & Dining Minori Minoru focuses on regional produce for local consumption, and was opened as a part of the Minori Minoru Project, which offers a variety of lifestyle options centered on Japanese agriculture.
In addition to soft, melt-in-the-mouth and delicious Bungo beef, they serve dishes centered around seasonal Oita produce like colorful vegetables and fruits.

In addition, lots of events are held at the AMU Plaza Oita’s rooftop garden “City Rooftop Place,” along with play equipment for children like a mini-train and more, offering plenty of family fun.

Moreover, near Oita Station is the long-established Tokiwa Department Store, the Oita Bank Akarengakan, which was designed by the same architect as Tokyo Station and is a tangible cultural property of Japan; along with nostalgic, retro shopping arcades and loads of other spots to glimpse the daily life of locals.

Continuing on, our host visited Kotsukotsu An, an old izakaya established over 40 years ago. Both the retro exterior and interior are imbued with a comfortable, nostalgic atmosphere, where you’ll be able to relish exquisite one-of-a-kind Oita dishes like the famous “ryukyu,” which uses renowned local Seki-saba and Seki-aji fish; the classic hometown dishes “koneri,” “kirasumameshi,” and more while listening to jazz music!

We hope that you too will be able to enjoy a fulfilling day of local cuisine, historical cultural treasures, shopping, and more in and around Oita Station!
