Lantern Festival at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens: In the Spirit of Obon

Lantern Festival: In the Spirit of Obon at Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, Florida. Enjoy Japanese folk-dancing and drumming, the Ennichi street fair, a beautiful and iconic lantern floating ceremony, and a finale of fireworks.

While Obon is celebrated mid-August in Japan, Morikami celebrates it mid-October each year. The Obon festival is one of Japan’s largest and most significant religious events. It is a Buddhist custom honoring the spirits of one’s ancestors, which is why it is also known as the festival of the dead or the festival of souls. The closest equivalent in the west is Halloween, but the big difference is that these spirits are not to be frightened away. The Buddhist custom is that the spirits of ancestors come out on Obon to visit their families, so they are welcomed with the Bon Odori dance and traditional meals are prepared for the spirits. The spirits are then guided home with paper lanterns to light their way.

This was on October 19, 2019.
