It is early May and we are keen to get the tomatoes planted and we find that planting lettuce around them is a good use of the space.

We have found that by planting the lettuce beneath the tomatoes they don’t compete with each other for space as the tomatoes go straight up the canes that we will be placing in soon. By the time the tomatoes roots are spreading wide and taking up lots of water and nutrients the lettuce will have gone to seed and have been fed to the chickens. The chickens are great for turning waste vegetables into eggs for us.
