How to prepare poppies for COLD 🥶: do nothing!

With cold temps in the forecast I’ve been getting a ton of questions about how to “protect” poppies and other seedlings. The answer is simple; don’t do anything!

  1. I sowed a batch of poppy seeds a couple of weeks ago and want to sow more if it’s not too late. Zone 7B/8.

  2. Thanks Bree, following your advice I had amazing luck with my poppies germination this year, and I purchased some very unique, kinda expensive varieties. So, I will do nothing being I’m in 8a, Atlanta, Ga we have been very wet and cold!

  3. Ok Bree so I totally forgot to plant my poppy seeds!!!! Can I sew them after this crazy cold snap?? We are about an hour south of you in Moore Co.

  4. Brie,
I'm confused. Why are wee seedlings less tender vs. cold than large seedlings/developed plants?
    Thank you. 😊

  5. I still haven't had any signs of them yet and sowed Nov 26. Still hopeful but I check everyday but I think we've had colder temps than you. I wasn't in a sun dress when you were—LOL. Larkspur always self seed and they are growing at least. Fingers still crossed here in zone 7 Prescott AZ

  6. It seems that foliage that has a high water content like lettuce or hydrangea leaves is much more susceptible to cold damage. Poppies are probably not in that category.
