How to Plant your Tomato for Maximum Success! Raised Bed Vegetable Gardening

In this video I show you how I dig a little hole, add some good compost, and tuck my tomatoes into their bed.

I have been using Espoma BioTone starter, mixed in with my soil for all of my new veggies and tropical plants and they LOVE it. Warning, it has a strong odor,, so don’t mix it in with your work cloths or shoes. GREAT stuff though. Here’s the link for it: https://amzn.to/30PC60F

Reaganite71 is now Tiki71 to reflect our love of tropical gardening, palm trees, and all things TIKI! I’m the same guy, just older, with a beard, and now I’m growing out instead of up thanks to Katiie’s cooking. And yes, you can grow Palms and Plumerias in Arkansas, you just need to know how to create micro climates and know what they need.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐ŸฝIf you see something you like in one of our videos, thereโ€™s a good chance weโ€™ve put it on our curated Amazon page: https://www.amazon.com/shop/tiki71 If you click through and buy something, we receive a small a very small commission (as little as 1%) that costs you NOTHING extra, but it helps with the costs of delivering content, so Ma-halo (thank you)! ๐ŸคŸ๐Ÿผ

๐Ÿ‘Ž๐Ÿผ I DO NOT buy, nor recommend plant SEEDS on Amazon, only live plant from sellers well rated. I’ve had too many bogus experiences.

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ I absolutely DO recommend Amazon on live plants that you canโ€™t get locally. Several of our multi-year tropicals have come from good suppliers on Amazon (like (Logeeโ€™s, American Plant Exchange, Cold Hardy Farms, Costa Farms, Old Oaks Nursery, Hirts, etc.) and arrived alive and well.

  1. Thanks, I found it very helpful. This will be my 1st raised bed garden this year. – Jen in Boston

  2. Friday & Saturday morning lows are supposed to be mid 30's here. The big storm system is supposed to be here around midnight, so I've got the greenhouse sides down and secured. I painted milk jugs black and let them heat up today. I've heard that they will slowly release their heat in the greenhouse overnight and help keep the temps up & plants warm. We'll see. ::fingers crossed::

  3. Thanks George. I single stem indeterminate tomatoes (Better Boys for example). Determinate ones, like Rutgers I let grow because they're only going to put out a certain amount. Since it's a raised bed, and I single stem many, I can plant more closely. For single stem, you can plant them as close as one foot apart and run them up a trellis. For the determinates, I like to give them 1 1/2 to 2 feet of spacing. I fudged a bit on that this year though because I had so many seeds germinate. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Thank You! I'm doing tomato plants in a raised bed for the first time and was in need of guidance! Now I feel better about my placements!

  5. You bet. Don't prune the suckers off the Early Girls. I found that out last year. They only put out so many shoots/tomatoes and that's it. (i.e. they're determinant tomatoes)

  6. Couldn't that tomato planted have been planted a little deeper?…it looks pretty tall I would have trenched it…otherwise good video!!

  7. As one other here posted: I would have taken that baby all the way to the top nodes. Were you leaving room for something or do you typically leave them that exposed? All of my tranplants to this point (both) have been as deep as I can get them and they explode. Another great vid Reaganite71! I look forward to watching your garden grow this summer.

  8. The reason I didn't go deeper is two fold. First the base of the material in the bed has lot of clay in it. It will take a couple of years of compost amending, turning to get it where I want it. Secondly, as fast as these are growing I wanted an air barrier zone to protect the young plants from disease and fungus.

  9. My maters up in Centerton are itching to be planted, but I am glad now that I have been too busy! This weather is nuts!

  10. Isn't that the truth! I was sweating in the garden yesterday and bundled up today. Nuts is the word.

  11. i'm a new subscriber and really enjoying going back and watching all your videos ๐Ÿ™‚ in east tn and our weather is crazy too…highs in the 80's the past week and now our extended forecast shows highs in the 60's for the next several days…make up your mind already!! thanks for all the videos…you're informative and entertaining…win, win!!

  12. As a matter of fact, I put some in the rain barrel water. I just forgot to mention it. Thanks!

  13. How far did you space your tomatoes? Also If you want to be organic just water with a organic fertilizer like from Neptune's harvest or even compost tea.

  14. I think you did a good job. But I think you forgot to plant it deeper as you were planning to do. Thank you for all your time and tips.

  15. About a foot and a half. It's a raised bed and I will be single stemming many of them.

  16. The reason I didn't go deeper is two fold. First the base of the material in the bed has lot of clay in it. It will take a couple of years of compost amending, turning to get it where I want it. Secondly, as fast as these are growing I wanted an air barrier zone to protect the young plants๏ปฟ from disease and fungus. I'm also going to be mounding with fresh compost around the stems as the season goes on.

  17. Approx. how long does it take for tomato seedlings to start growing its true leaves? I just germinated some beefsteak tomatoes 7 days ago and have no idea how long it can possibly take for them to be ready for a bigger pot. Any advice?

  18. On average it's 3-4 weeks after germination. Make sure you keep the light close to the plants so they don't get too leggy. But monitor it daily so you don't let the seedlings get burnt on the light. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  19. Does it really need a little hole to plant tomato in a raised bed garden? Well, I guess this will really help somehow. It's a good thing to learn such way and I hope this will really work out and create a very productive tomatoes.ย
