In this video I show you how I dig a little hole, add some good compost, and tuck my tomatoes into their bed.

Friday & Saturday morning lows are supposed to be mid 30's here. The big storm system is supposed to be here around midnight, so I've got the greenhouse sides down and secured. I painted milk jugs black and let them heat up today. I've heard that they will slowly release their heat in the greenhouse overnight and help keep the temps up & plants warm. We'll see. ::fingers crossed::
Thanks George. I single stem indeterminate tomatoes (Better Boys for example). Determinate ones, like Rutgers I let grow because they're only going to put out a certain amount. Since it's a raised bed, and I single stem many, I can plant more closely. For single stem, you can plant them as close as one foot apart and run them up a trellis. For the determinates, I like to give them 1 1/2 to 2 feet of spacing. I fudged a bit on that this year though because I had so many seeds germinate. ๐

You bet. Don't prune the suckers off the Early Girls. I found that out last year. They only put out so many shoots/tomatoes and that's it. (i.e. they're determinant tomatoes)

Couldn't that tomato planted have been planted a little deeper?…it looks pretty tall I would have trenched it…otherwise good video!!
As one other here posted: I would have taken that baby all the way to the top nodes. Were you leaving room for something or do you typically leave them that exposed? All of my tranplants to this point (both) have been as deep as I can get them and they explode. Another great vid Reaganite71! I look forward to watching your garden grow this summer.

The reason I didn't go deeper is two fold. First the base of the material in the bed has lot of clay in it. It will take a couple of years of compost amending, turning to get it where I want it. Secondly, as fast as these are growing I wanted an air barrier zone to protect the young plants from disease and fungus.

How far did you space your tomatoes? Also If you want to be organic just water with a organic fertilizer like from Neptune's harvest or even compost tea.

Approx. how long does it take for tomato seedlings to start growing its true leaves? I just germinated some beefsteak tomatoes 7 days ago and have no idea how long it can possibly take for them to be ready for a bigger pot. Any advice?
On average it's 3-4 weeks after germination. Make sure you keep the light close to the plants so they don't get too leggy. But monitor it daily so you don't let the seedlings get burnt on the light. ๐
