Garden Design

Back To The Garden Design Drawing Board For Plan B 👍

Last week I started redesigning my full shade border where, as well as having lots of shade loving plants, I’m going to add a seat as it’s a particularly lovely view of the rest of the garden from that spot.

However, my dear friend Shirlene who watches my channel has been suggesting that I move my large topiary euonymus as it really blocks it all.

At first I said I couldn’t, as it’s such an old deep rooted shrub and would be so difficult to move. But she got me thinking … and I just knew she was right!! So I thought about it all week, and today I’m doing it!

And I figured that’s the art of garden design really, first attempts don’t always come out how you envisage them. It’s all part of the fun … thinking up new ideas, and plotting and scheming and planning. Well, what else would I do with my spare time? 🤣🤣

Thanks have to go to Richard, because I would never have been able to dig this euonymus out on my own.

So I hope you agree that it now makes all the difference. It was a whole day of hard working moving everything all around again, but I’m so pleased I did. And thank you to everyone who comments on my videos and suggests things and gives me such great ideas. I listen to you all, your advice, tips and tricks are invaluable.

  1. Good job on getting all that root. I was huffing and puffing along with you both. Can't wait to see what chair/bench you put in your new space.

  2. Man that was a bear to remove. That was a great idea to move now you will have a full view of your beautiful garden. It definitely takes time to think things through. I like the boxwoods as well. Looking forward to seeing what type of bench you get. Thanks for sharing.

  3. OMGoodness ….. What a job and what a beautiful result ….. I just love those baby Euonymus lining the stepping stones ….. Isn't it interesting how our gardens evolve over time ….. and the fact that if we don't like something we can just change it …. So helpful for our mental health ….. You came up with a perfect plan … Now Richard needs to come up with the perfect chair / bench …. not just any old one … it needs to be just the right one …. Hehee ….. Hugs for you and I am assuming that you have had a chance it get some rest after all of that work … !!!

  4. Phew!! I felt your pain moving the Euonymus Janette and Richard. Euonymus are an excellent replacement for the boxwood. Looks lovely 😍

  5. That’s the gardeners life , there’s always changing things around . I like it .
Next time Richard don’t come out , you need to pull the main power breaker out , and say ; oops , I think we just lost the power , lol

  6. I’m glad you had some time to decide on the changes you made. Your secret corner is really starting to take shape! That was kind of Richard to take time out to help you! Lottie sure is a curious helper! Your hard work will pay off in the end!

  7. Janette, I love the new layout,it opens up the space a lot more and the euonymus will be happier in its new home up against the house. I need to get a few of those little bushes they are adorable and such a great filler along the path, it reminds me of your adored boxwoods. Do you know how tall they will grow? Can’t wait to see the bench that Richard is making. He was such a big help digging out the euonymus and don’t forget the pups, they were helping in thier own way😂🥰💚

  8. Hi Janette, your friend was quite right about moving the Euonimous. So glad you reinstated the planting where the box used to be. I loved the view up to the illusion gate.
Now you have the view to set out to achieve, looking over the whole of your lovely garden. There is sun today in my shady part of the garden. Looking forward to seeing your new seat in place.

  9. Lottie steals the show! Shes such a doll. Janette everything looks so beautiful. Richard is such a good guy.😊

  10. Hello Janette

I love you your choice of euonymous. The different greens are fabulous. My local garden centre is bursting with new plants. I bought some doronicum. Their yellow flowers brighten up the garden. Sometimes they don't last as a perennial( which they are). We shall see. I take comfort from Linda Vater who has plant losses every year and keeps on persevering😀🌟💞

  11. Jeanette – looks great! How big will those little euonymus get? And, what is your planting zone?

  12. I do the same thing Janette, I get excited about a project and start before I've considered all options. I just put out a video today removing some plants, because, if you don't like it, change it. I'm a strong believer in that. I love the way it your secret garden looks, can't wait to see more updates.

  13. That’s lovely Janette! You inspire me to have a go & edit our own garden! Now that I’ve persuaded my husband to give me parts of his lawn😂 I’m thinking Dahlia & Cosmos border!😃

  14. The Euonymus really are a great substitute for Box. I have them planted around my lawn and I keep them at knee height….best of all they behave themselves! And what a job digging up that root ball….well Richard had already had a rest watching the golf on the TV!

  15. I understand to well I am down sizing my beds I feel I have to many so moving plants into other beds still beautiful but less beds

  16. That looked like hard work 🤔,tired just watching it 😬and poor Richard being disturbed from watching the golf ⛳️ naughty Lady 😂by the way what’s in that big tub 🤔🌻🪴

  17. Great vid Janette! I would recomend staking up that old tree you mowed. Any wobbling in its spot kills fiberous roots and decrease chanse of survival. That spot shaded from decidious trees looks like a perfect place for the chinese garden orchid (bletilla striata). Flowering starts at the same time as the trees gets into leaf. And it is hardy to your area.

  18. You've just got to keep an open mind and think outside the box when gardening. What a job it was to move that Euonymus! Your new plan is ideal 💗

  19. Richard to the rescue! I think I was sweating a little bit…wowzers. 😂

I love the change. Definitely opened things up a bit. Who knew?! 🤷‍♀️

I adore the new plantings. I’ve already forgotten what you called them earlier. 😂

    Great job!

  20. Those daffodils you planted it next too are beautiful! I love the two toned colored ones 😊I agree it will be much better with a clear view!

  21. Looks so nice now with all that open space. Is there another plant shopping trip in your future, maybe some beautiful Easter plantings.? Have a lovely week and weekend.!

  22. It's going to look great Janette, well worth the effort of digging it up well done Richard! I think you made the right decision you'll have a wonderful vantage point there when things heat up you can sit & relax in the shade & admire all your hard work x

  23. Can you tell us what type of mushroom you have growing in this garden? I've never seen them, accept in a painting.
