Container Gardening – Charlotte Potato Harvest Reveal

Hiya!
It is about time I’ll reveal the winner of the container grown Charlotte potatoes:
Small pots were planted 10th April and spent early months in the shelter of the greenhouse. The shaws were cut 28th June and pots placed outside in a sunny but sheltered from heavy rains position under the shed roof.
The large growbags were planted 15th April and stayed exposed to all weather conditions since then.
Shaws were cut in July.

The original planting video is here:

Small pots:
I – 2 seed potatoes (10 Litre Pot) = 54 gr/ Harvest 617gr
II – 2 seed potatoes (10 Litre Pot) = 48gr/ Harvest 600gr
III – 2 seed potatoes (10 Litre Pot) = 58gr/ Harvest 683gr
IV – 2 seed potatoes (10 Litre Pot) = 63gr/ Harvest 610gr
V – 3 seed potatoes (12 Litre Pot) = 82gr/ Harvest 765gr
VI – 3 seed potatoes (12 Litre Pot) = 75gr/ Harvest 736gr

1 tonne growbags:
I – 15 seed potatoes (used 50 litres underneath and 50 litres above the potatoes)= 1038gr/ Harvest 5200gr
II – 15 seed potatoes (used 50 litres underneath and 50 litres above the potatoes)= 1048gr/ Harvest 5400gr

So the conclusion is – small pots return in average is over 10 times more than the return from the growbags. The potatoes are also much healthier and cleaner looking, hardly any scab affected tubers, but overall the harvest potato size is small.

The growbag potatoes have more of larger size tubers but also a lot more scab covered and some very small rot-affected tubers (these were not weighed for the harvest result). The harvest return was about 5 times the seed potatoes weight.

Next year I will focus growing the potatoes in the smaller size pots for Charlottes indeed but the reveal for the main crop varieties is due still, so stay tuned for updates!

Best wishes, M. xx

  1. Great result! 🙌 Truthfully, I’d been hoping the pots would win too because although the big bulk bags are handy, the pots are so much more convenient. And certainly more convenient than growing spuds in the soil. Super!

  2. Great job with the harvest! Very helpful to hear your harvest weights compared to what you planted, I'll definitely have to start keeping track of mine!

  3. Great video, I love all the information you get from the comparison.
I watched it twice just to note everything.
I think the two seed potatoes in the 15L did better than the three seed potatoes in the 20L?

  4. I prefer the big grow bags too be honest!! The pots seem too generate a lot of small potatoes which I have trouble using up!!

  5. I grew several varieties of first early, second early and main crop this year. All outdoors. The potatoes in small grow bags were more productive and in better condition than those grown in large tubs or in the ground. I have Christmas potatoes growing in the small grow bags now, and I recently moved them under cover into a grow house. Looking forward to seeing how they perform. I have 3 varieties, including Charlotte.

  6. Such a beautiful day for potato harvesting today ,so greatfull that you have a beautiful field of potato . Thanks for sharing and see you again!!
