Hello! My name is Bethany and I grow things in my rooftop container garden in Chicago, zone 6a. I’ve been container gardening for four years and am by no means an expert, just someone who enjoys sharing their garden journey.
In this video, I’ll go over some of the pros and cons I’ve learned from the last four years gardening on a rooftop deck.

Every year I grow SunPatiens in pots on my front porch steps. This year I also ordered supertunia Vista Bubblegum, thanks to you, from Amazon. I have 2 large containers with them in front of the porch. They don’t get as much sun as yours does, but they’re doing pretty good so far……
I don't envy your trips up and down the stairs. I appreciate my bigger space, but more space, more decisions ugh . I do envy your lack of pests and weeds. (I'm looking at you cabbage moth!) I chuckled when you mentioned deer as a pest you don't worry about. 😆 Good tips!
Really good cardio for up and down the stairs! LOL
❤️❤️❤️❤️
I have a in ground garden and a deck garden as well. Pest pressure is way less on deck as you mentioned. Also easier to maintain.
Thank you so much for sharing! I appreciate the dahlias and can’t wait for updates about wintering your new ones this year and see if they survive like your old one did! 😉
Hi Bethany, everyone's growing conditions are unique and to me that is part of the fun of container gardening. It's much easier to move a container than to have to have to dig up a plant and find another home for it. My decent sized balcony has "micro" climates around how much sun, wind etc that it receives and finding the right plants for each area is part of the challenge. Thank you for the reminder about weight limitations and I will be looking into that more. I see no down sides in container gardening especially when it comes to weeds, animals, growing conditions because we can control it all. I feel like we are on this journey together as we are in similar growing zones – I'm in south central Pennsylvania growing zone 7a formerly 6a. I appreciate your thoughtfulness for all of your plants. Take care and happy 4th of July Holiday.
I recently moved from an apartment with a giant backyard to one that was completely paved over, I was so sad! But I'm learning there are a lot of pros to container gardening. One is that it forces you to really focus on soil quality, and you have complete control over what soil you use. Before I would just stick things in the dirt and hope for the best, but now I know a lot more about soil, compost, etc.
