Cleaning up & Reorganizing My Studio

My studio had gotten to the point of no return. I couldn’t get anything done, I pretty much walked through it with blinders on, it had become so messy it was stressing me out. SO! A big, big cleanup and reorganization was needed. This took about a week from start to finish with many, many hours spent each day. It was a much bigger job than I had initially realized, but once it was done, what a relief!
Come join me as I clean and reorganize.

After graduating from Parsons School of Design, I began my career in fashion design and freelanced both in New York City, as well as London. I designed hand knits for Elle Magazine and was the editor of the Hand Knit Page before hand knits fell out of fashion in the early 1990’s and the page was discontinued. In 2008 I launched my jewelry design business, designing fine jewelry in 18 & 20 Kt Gold with gemstones that I hand select for each piece. Several awards and numerous write ups & interviews later, I rediscovered hand stitching and my life took another turn, eventually leading me to improvisational stitching, which I teach workshops on: https://arianezurcher.com/workshops/
I was awarded an artist’s residency in Orquevaux, France and began playing with paint on the fabric pieces I was creating, which rekindled my love of painting, abstract art and collage.
I sold my first felt embroidered xmas tree ornaments to a small shop in Northern California when I was 16 years old, sold a painting that same year and never looked back. And while I’ve had detours along the way: had two children, worked at an advertising agency, got into acting in my early 20’s, published numerous articles for various magazines and wrote for the Huffington Post, I have always created in some form. Art is my love and remains so to this day.

I love inspiring and encouraging others to create as well and to find their voice through whatever medium suits them. So come with me as I explore the creative process in all its varied forms, strengthening and finding my voice, while learning to strengthen and find yours as well!

  1. Great job on the clean up. Hope you share on You Tube what you are working on. I always get inspired by seeing your videos. Thank you for all you share.

  2. Oh Ariane! How awesome! I know how overwhelming it can feel when our sacred space gets out of whack. It can make my brain hurt when attempting to make it work again. Then the joy when the task is finished. I heard the relief in your voice. Well done!

  3. Great job! I've never believed that a creative spirit needs chaos around it to achieve something great….but chaos seems to be something that most of use find ourselves working in so often. I love the process of telling myself to STOP, take a breath, dig in and find forgotten treasures, and yes…even come to terms with old projects I'll never want to finish. When all is done, it's like a huge weight has been lifted and I'm anxious to start again. It's so nice to hear your voice again. Have a wonderful holiday Ariane.

  4. Wow! That's an beautiful creative space. It's lovely to see back on here Ariane, that means your family is ok and life is back to normal, and it sounds like you had a vacation too? Richard is so kind to help you, as not all hubbys would ! I love the way you guys care for each other. Your reorganisation of your space is to be envied! Not that why is a good thing but I hope you know what I mean! Looking forward to your next journey of creativeness.

  5. So excited you’re back! Keeping my workspace workable is always a challenge for me! Maybe if I just worked on one project at a time? Nope, that’s not going to happen!🙄🙄🙄

  6. So satisfying to accomplish a more organized studio! May you have many hours of creative doings in your newly cleaned studio! It took me weeks to organize my studio in to a workable space again! And that was with help from my two sisters coming in to town to help! I still have some work to be done, but I’m more than halfway done! It really is daunting when it’s chaotic! You’ve done a lovely job!

  7. Very impressive re-org. Your space with the colors of fabrics, threads, etc is a quilt of many colors, and quite beautiful.

  8. So exciting Ariane!! That will be such a wonderful start to your new year! I can hear your voice change w relief as you get to the end of the video (hugs!!!)
I need to continue with similar. Have you thought of using comic book boards and cases/or no cases for your fabric? I've been putting linen – cross stitch at this point and wrapping onto comic boards by size – 28, 32,…40, 45, 56 and occasionally by dyer.. (when I have a lot and want to keep them together by size). It keeps them clean and makes it so much easier to find what I need. I hope to do the same with cotton fabric but that will be a multi-month task. Right now, fabrics are stored by color in multiple plastic containers under a bed in the spare bedroom. I plan to show Rob your cabinets. I really need something similar in our shop room and my office. The new year will be great! Next two weeks are reserved for my granddaughter – Keiko and Renny just got here from Japan. I'm headed up to NYC tomorrow to spend the week with Renny while Keiko and Paddy work. After Paddy's work ends Christmas Day they will come to PA. Have a wonderful holiday Ariane!!
