August is the perfect month to have a look at what has and hasnโt worked in your garden this year. The plants are, for the most part, grown to their full size and when I planted them earlier this Spring I hadnโt realised that some would get squashed by their neighbours, and others would get hidden by larger plants in front of them. Some are now in completely the wrong spot and others are overshadowing features I still want to see.
Itโs also a good time to review how the annuals are looking, particularly the ones I grew for the first time from seed. Which ones do I love, and want to grow again, and which ones do I really not care for and wonโt bother sowing again?
Because if we donโt have a look around our gardens now, in the month of August, then by the time Autumn and Winter come and everything dies back or disappears, believe me we are bound to forget and then weโll have all the same mistakes again this time next year. ๐

Lovely display . Quick note on the pear tree. Most won't give fruit until the third or fourth year. It's a long haul sometimes

Look at your beautiful sedums and chinese plumbago. Mine are flopped all over the place!!! You can split salvias if you want something else for repeat planting, I'm sure you knew that though!!! Your garden is looking fantastic xx
Everything looks beautiful at full size. Youโve reminded me how much I like ageratumโI need to grow that next year. I grew it at my dads apartment a few years ago and it was lovely. Also, Iโm amazed at the size or your Veronica plant. Mine is a wee thing. Maybe because it is the first season Iโve had it. ๐คท๐ฝโโ๏ธ Anyway, great reminders/tips as always. Things donโt die back here to the same degree but they do โdiminishโ and itโs still easy to forget what itโs like during the height of the growing season.
Yes I have lots of things to move also! If you will chelsey chop your yarrow (achillea ) in spring it will help with the flopping.
Love your tips. Itโs a great idea to take note now of everything. Itโs hot and humid here and afraid to move and plants right now it seems the sun is hotter in places in yard that wasnโt before! Strange year. Love your videos and gardens.
Why not get an obelisk for your rose instead of moving it?
Hello ๐ Janette, I love this video, everything that you said is so true, we must take mental notes and move things that arenโt really fitting into a space. I have many plants like you that need more room or need to be seen๐. Itโs my first season with huge perennial beds in the back of the house as we ripped out the bushes that were there and decided to have butterfly gardens and some of the plants are getting huge so they will need to be moved๐๐. Keep us posted ๐

You are right. August is a great time to sit back and evaluate what has worked and what hasn't in our gardens. Your Sedum is gorgeous, hopefully the second one will be the same after moving it. I love your cat sculpture and it needs to be seen. Also I am totally envious of your rain….. here it has been nothing but blue skies and high temperatures. We are on red alert for the next 9 days with temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius and worse still tropical nights. I am so looking forward to September!
Thank you another useful and fun video Janette. Great tip (think it was Mary) about the Achillea chop in spring. Mine have been lovely but finally crashed with the wind and rain. I have already moved my dwarf Veronica, but it had finished flowering and one or two other plants. One of Linda Vaters subscribers (sorry but can find her name)husband said if it doesn't grow on a shovel it's got no place in the yard, which had me laughing for ages. Just hope the plants I've moved already, forgive me and flower again.
OMG ….. I would have said OMGoodness …. but nooooo it is definitely …. OMG …. there is a giant Spider on the wall behind you …. That is the one thing that I will not have in my garden …. Know what I mean …. ??? …. LOL … I am still shuddering from seeing it ….. Hugs …… PS …. I have been doing the same thing as you …in planning my next years landscape ….. !!!

I have 40 year old Autumn Joy sedums from my late mom's garden in their original planters and they've self seeded at the base of those planters . I never water them they just get rain water. As for the floppy plants, you can do the Chelsea chop. Are you going to save zinnia seeds? I'm not 100% sure,but I think they come true from seed, so you could save seeds from any blooms you like. Your garden still looks beautiful, mine not so much. Happy gardening from the Pocono mountains Pa.

Iโm definitely guilty of planting things too close together ๐คฃ. Good tip to take note now that things are all filled out. My other problem is that Iโm already thinking of other plants I want to add so need to consider what has to go which is very hard. ๐ค maybe Iโll just extend it.
