Pruning My Lavender and Black Locust, The Bonsai Zone, Dec 2022

I’m pruning my Lavender (Lavandula) plant that I got from Xin into a more tree like form.
I’m also pruning my Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) tree that started life from a seed in my wife’s garden.

  1. I have a sunburst locust that doesn’t have thorns and it’s doing quite well. They are common here in the Pacific Northwest.

  2. the plant in bloom in the last part I believe to be Viola alba. It's from the Violaceae family they are quite lovely in my opinion. It could be cool if you got Viola odorata also and planted it with yours the white of V. alba would contrast nicely with the purple of V. odorata

  3. Really like how you don't seem to use wire. You cut to create all you want.

Your more mature tree's look amazing so you're clearly highly skilled in your decisions.

These YouTube videos are so useful to seeing how you think.

  4. live in ny (hudson valley) right next to a honey locust grove. took a small one of of the ground few years back to bonsai with. they make beautiful trees. very showy. i killed it tho lol. not sure why it didnt make it tbh.i learn by trial and error (mostly error lol) nice lavender nigel. love the un common bonsai

  5. One thing about lavender that I learned the hard way is that is doesn't like being pruned back so hard as to remove all foliage. this just causes the plant to die.

  6. That little plant with the round leaves and white flowers is a violet. they handle cool weather okay at least in the ground, however, they do best in filtered light and shade.
