Backyard Garden

My Backyard Garden: Kumquats (or in Australian: CUMquats). Miniature Orange/lemon fusion.

One of my many plants in my garden is the Kumquats plant: Citrus japonica, also known as Miniature Orange Lemon. It is said that it originated from the Southern China region. As for what I know, the ripe fruit is edible including the skin. From my taste experience, the skin is tangy sweet, but the inside pulp and juice is orangy lemon sour. It is mainly use in sour sauce and sour soups. It being related to the citrus tree family, flowers appear in the late Spring and early Summer, green fruit buds appear in the Summer, but ripens in late fall into Winter. Yes it does take a lot of time for ripening. As for growing, It does prefer being semi under the canopy of other taller plants that give some sun light and cool shades. As for my growing this, I am in Riverside CA, USA, Zone 9.
