Evolution of Nepenthes' symbiotic insects and microbes

Kadeem Gilbert is currently Assistant Professor at Michigan State University’s Kellogg Biological Station, having recently begun this position in August 2021. He was a USDA-NIFA postdoctoral fellow at Penn State University from 2019-2021. Gilbert earned his PhD at Harvard University in 2019, where he studied the ecology and evolution of pitcher trait diversity in Nepenthes and their interactions with symbiotic insects and microbes.

This talk will cover his work on the role of pitcher traits in mediating their biotic interactions, as well as a preliminary look at ongoing work investigating how a key trait (pH regulation) may apply more broadly to other, non-carnivorous plants.
