  1. Unfortunately the Telegames Personal Arcade variant of the Dina 2-in-1 is rare and expensive. Kudos for knowing about it. Fortunately I already own a Japanese SMS, which is fully backwards compatible with Sega's earlier consoles. I still want a Telegames Personal Arcade, but that will have to wait.

  2. Great and insightful episode indeed. I do agree that the SG-1000 is a defining moment for Sega in their craft of making video-game consoles. And, even being inexperienced on making home consoles at that time, they managed to make an up-to-date system for the time period. The technical connections to other systems, specially Coleco and MSX, were fairly detailed here on the video, as much as the siblings and successors the SG-1000 had.

I had a Master System manufactured by Tec Toy back in the 1990s, by the way. Kinda sad to see how much the Brazilian manufacturer ignored the library of the older Japanese brother in the reeditions of SMS here. Definitely I'd appreciate to see a Master System Mini with SG-1000 games in it.

All the best and keep up the great work!

  3. You just showed our entire MSX game collection; so many games I'd forgotten about. The jetpack dude, Othello, that diving thing, all of them!

  4. The company Analogue certainly felt the SG1000 was of some importance. Their FPGA console clone of the Mega Drive, the Mega Sg, has an adapter set for MyCard, Mark III and SG1000, with Game Gear as well for good measure. A Master System adapter was included with the Mega Sg. It may not be the original experience, but it brings new life to the original cartridges.

  5. Wonderful video as always, I really enjoy your indepth research on the systems I never had a chance to play as a kid. (I was a C64 kid in the early 80's). Great work sir, top notch!

  6. That's exactly what I was thinking i.e. A Sega Master System Mini with a selection of SG1000 games. Great video. Keep up the awesome work 🙂

  7. Looking for an SG-1000 fix and I came across the ColecoVision Flashback collection on Steam. I know it's not the Sega console games but it's close. It's a bit pricey at £14.99 but it comes with 40 games and the AT Games Flashback ColecoVision Console is harder to find here in the UK. Any experience of this collection?

  8. It's funny that the first time I've tried a Sega SG-1000 was kinda disgusted, and honestly I still don't remember exactly the reason why that happened.
Now I can personally say that I love everything about the style of the SG-1000, from the graphics to the sound department. Another obscure japanese console I love is the Epoch Super Cassette Vision, who expanded the original Cassette Vision to bring a console who was really unique even for its time.
Thanks for the video, really exaustive: I learned many thing I never knew about the system. It's a shame that nowadays retrogamers never bring to these obscure consoles the attention they deserve: they represent pure history of gaming technology. Maybe it's due to their japanese nature, or maybe their lack of success can let some people think that they don't worth any kind of attention.
    Cheers from Italy.

  9. Winning on the third time to be a video it's kind of Apt considering the mark I and Mark II for sale did not do great but the mark III aka master system did well on the world stage even if it could not win in the US

  10. It's nice how you often mention your poll results in these videos… and also surprising how quickly you can put these videos together after receiving said poll results. You don't have a stash of these videos, just waiting to upload them based on the results, do you?

3:17 – Such a step seems the most logical one, avoiding the hassle of having to make multiple versions of the same game with differing specs, but as noted such a plan would hold back the rapid development of arcade machines and the potential they had for more distinct experiences. Of course, the Neo-Geo would later go on to do amazing things with their machine for ages.

7:08 – I knew of the Colecovision connection but not that it also applied to a handful of other systems. I also didn't know that Ninja Princess ended up on non-Sega systems.

12:06 – Oh gosh, that Woolworths ad makes me feel nostalgic… not that I remember that specific ad but just remembering Woolworths. The Sega Mark 4 being the code-name for the Mega Drive is a cute bit of trivia.

18:31 – Agreed, Sega have a lot of untapped potential in releasing plug-in-play mini variants of their other consoles or perhaps even allowing compilations of their non-Mega Drive games to be released. Quite a few of the SG-1000 games shown throughout the video looked very fun.

  11. I like the system. I have a PAL SC3000H. Pretty fun games, but I do use the Master System controller, as the original joystick is horrible.
