Which Filters Do You Need For Landscape Photography?

Best Book Ever Written? https://www.fototripper.com/chasing-awe-landscape-photography-book-gavin-hardcastle/

Let me give you the hard truth about filters. I’m pretty sure the filter companies won’t be too happy about me telling you this, but it’s the truth. I kiss goodbye to many lucrative sponsorship deals.

There’s really only one filter that I think you need for landscape photography in about 90% of scenarios and it’s really rather dull and unexciting.

I go out on location to explain my philosophy on filters for landscape photography and I’m lucky enough to capture a spectacular moment of magical light while doing it.

Let me show you examples of why and how I used the filters that I use and one of the benefits of having a Youtube channel. I’ll also explain the filters I never use and why they don’t make sense for my type of landscape photographer.

I give you a practical demonstration of how I use 10-stop neutral density filters in extremely rare cases for certain types of shots. Things go well and I almost sound professional but then I start talking to an imaginary voice over my shoulder and lose all credibility.

Hit play, then hit like.

  1. wish there was a decent cpl for my fpv drone footage, the amount of times fiddlin with gopro settingsand nd filters has gone wrong…..jeeeezus wept!

  2. Wow, I had totally forgot about Gavin. I guess I should put on the notifications or he will end up in my filter junk pile 😂 thanks for the content

  3. Hi All, I see your point about manipulating in (Photoshop) to duplicate the effects of filters, but I tend to disagree. Filters are just that, they filter light, in effect reducing/amplifying “detail” in a shot; which really gets-my-goat. Adding detail, say in the shadow areas of a print, changes the (emotional impact) it portrays. If you want to create a certain “look/feeling” you need to take that into consideration.

  4. Hi Gavin, thank you (as always) for a great video. I recently decided against the Sigma 14-24 due to its bulbous front element and the limitations re magnetic/screw-on filters that come with it. Seeing as you’ve started shooting this lens….have you found a workaround for using your CPL on that very piece of glass? All the best and hope you find a minute to get back to me. Cheers, Oliver

  5. Using grey grads is a choice, and yes you can do it in software if you choose – however, I still prefer to work to get a single image as best as I can in camera at time; and that means that I will use a grad. Also, I cannot stand the software step – some people really get off on it, but I really don't like it. Maybe that is the real reason as to why I don't bracket and all that jazz.

  6. What a magical sunrise! You are spot on with a lot of what you say with filters, and if I could only carry one, it would be a CPL. My "sweet spot" for rivers and waterfalls is 2 to 8 seconds, so I often carry a ND/CPL combo filter around 4 stops (ND32). I've been carrying the Kase filters and I like them because the magnetic rings stick together and you can stack still maintaining minimum space in the bag or pocket. The only other thing I pay close attention to when purchasing filters is the type of coatings they use. I like filters with tempered glass, and coatings similar to the lens I am putting them on to as well. Making sure the back of the filter is coated as well is important when shooting into the light otherwise you get that flare too often. Thanks again for another honest and informative video.

  7. You speak a lot of sense as always and the last minute of this video with you talking to your screen double was priceless. Appeals to my sense of humour, as a fellow Yorkshire man, now exiled in East Anglia.

  8. My first Gavin Hardcastle video on YouTube. The jury is still out. I'll have to watch another.

  9. Another great vid. I totally agree on CPL only. FYI: it's pronounced Minas (Minus) Basin. Cheers from Eastern Passage.

  10. Thanks for the insight! I to only use a polarizer but been toying with the idea of getting some NDs. I didn't do a lot of research on it but the bit I did do it seems the only reason people use them to smooth chopy waters.

  11. Many years ago I bought yellow, orange, red , blue filters. Today, I'm happy I did as I use them for my B&W photography, digital as well as film. I also use other filters to avoid pfaffing about editing photos on the computer.

  12. Hallelujah!!! So I'm not some sort of lone freaky dinosaur after all, well not regards photography in public anyway. Having been weaned on film and joining the big boys when an early teen by using slide film, I still always use a polariser and moved to a circular one as we all did, my first one had to be 2nd hand as otherwise a bit £££ for my pocket money. It's refreshing to confirm I'm not a photographer in a quant way that harks back to the past….incidentally….I still take digital in a similar manner to analogue, almost as if there are a limited number of frames. Each one considered and each one to count rather than hosing things down with all permutations to ensure at least one reasonable image…somewhere. As always, love your images…and videos, keep it up, and I'm always waiting for the next.

  13. I had to back up a few times to hear what you said in describing your first set up. I finally understood that you were talking about beautiful light, but I thought you were saying beautiful wife, both of course being true. OK I'll turn on captions.

  14. I can see your point. On the other hand it’s all about having fun in the field. Maybe You should take example from good photographers like Thomas Heaton. Maybe if you did, you’d also become a good one and found nd-grads useful?
Thanks for this useless content and wasting my precious time. I can’t wait for next vlog! 🙂 C U!

  15. I just ordered some of the magnetic Maven filters excited to try them out when I get them in. I hate screw on filters and step up rings. I want speed and performance. Strong NDs can be a useful tool for some water/cloud effects, but the biggest thing for sure is the CPL.

  16. @18.42 insert 'Simple Minds/Don't You for Get about me'.. great vid as usual Gavin, and I'm a street shooter!

  17. Loved it Gavin and holy crap, that sunrise with that light, unreal man. By the way, how is the church coming? I'm looking forward to the next video.

  18. Filters: UV to protect the lens from fingers and other stupid acts. CP for wet things and water. ND for when you want a long exposure without stopping down to a pinhole. Others are for BW film. Hoya is a good brand, but 'what rock?' Is a strange name for a filter.

  19. Hi Gavin, i have just recently subscribed to your channel and have thoroughly enjoyed every Video i have seen. You and Amanda and your cronies are so much fun to watch and i love your photography and the places that you visit. Your little egg eating mate is such a character

  20. When you said using a 10 stop ND filter was like polishing a turd I had a religious moment and said 'Amen brother.' The irony is we could all do with a bit of turd polishing on our landscape photography adventures.

  21. I agree with what you say from a practical perspective, and it may some form of self-sadism on my part, but I actually enjoy using filters even though I know I can do it in Photoshop. I love the act of making the image out in the field as that is where I get to relax and be in the moment and be away from a screen. There is something nice about seeing what you create on the back of the screen, even though I will be sticking into Lightroom later on. Good luck with the Church roof, my own renovation project is costing so much I may as well of bought the entire Lee filter range, it would have been the same value for money 🙂

  22. Nice marching. A very good vid with real information. I played with ND filters once. I did stop the water and got some blur and it was a fun day. The Polarizer is very old school. As a kid seeing photos where the clouds were black made a big impression on me. I have some old time pics on the wall.
