Will My Chicken Recover from Injury? And More Winter Gardening Jobs ~ Allotment Vlog

Hi everyone,

This week all attention has been on Flossie the Pekin chicken and her poorly leg.

We now think that Flossie’s leg is not broken and it’s more likely that she got her foot caught up somehow and struggled to release it and in the process she tore or damaged a muscle. All of her joints are working which is a great sign and she is starting to stand up better. She’s still doing a lot of sitting down in the run and going off into the nest box for a sleep. She is still eating and drinking and mooching about but not with the bounce she once had. Poor Flossie!!

Plus some gardening jobs, some pretty disappointing parsnips and another whopping cabbage!

I hope you enjoy this weeks vlog.

Stay warm and safe,

Sarah 🌸

  1. Can you tell if it's her leg or just a toe? Sometimes their toes get caught on things, especially if they've had a scare. It doesn't look like a broken leg from the way she's moving and if she's not lethargic that's a good sign. You could try making her a splint but not much else youcan do. Maybe give her some treats and just a little apple cider vinegar in the water. Good luck ❤

  2. Hi Sarah, I showed my chicken expert daughter, Flossie, and she thinks its a sprain and Metacam should help and takes about a week to kick in as its cumulative. Also she said to check the underside of her foot for a pinprick hole which causes the infection Bumblefoot. Pekins are ground huggers and often pick up foot problems. We've had it quite a few times. I'm sure you know all this, but just in case! We hope by this time she's improving. Sending love to Flossie and hugs to you to stop worrying!! Have a great week 🐔

  3. Poor Flossy, I hope she bounces back soon. Love chickens, they are such characters. Especially pekins, they can be so affectionate. We had some a few years ago.

  4. I thought you were pulling a Mandrake instead of a parsnip lol (harry potter) was expecting a screech. great vlog and hope Flossy ok

  5. Ohhh bless your parsnips! 2 years I've done well with mine, Leeks I've taken them out in disgust and my celeriac will be outed at the weekend, its tiny! I sowed it early but just didnt plant it out, lesson learned! Take care x

  6. Poor Flossy….hope she is ok Sarah! So good to see you uncovering those paths again……you’ve done loads of jobs there….well done! 😁💪🏼

  7. Sarah well done for being such a wonderful chicken owner, you are certainly doing all the right things, have you had a look underneath her foot/feet, in case it's bumblefoot? everything crossed for Flossie! xx

  8. Hi Sarah, poor Flossie hope she gets better soon. Shame about the parsnips but better than nothing. I think that cabbage would have one the competition for the largest cabbage in Suffolk, until the large leaves came off 😄. Hope you have a good week, stay warm and take care. 🙂

  9. I hope Flossy pick up soon. Your parsnips we’re about as successful as mine 😂. On the surface mine looked great, at least 4 inches diameter. I thought here we go. Pulled up the first one and it was about 2 inches long. Would have fit perfectly in a cereal bowl. That said it tasted great.

  10. Poor babbies it’s hard when they are hurt or sick 🤒. If only our seedlings and veg were as resilient as the bloody weds 🤷‍♀️. Everything looks fantastic and you are doing an excellent job. Everything here is still under snow ⛄️ oh well 😂😂. Have a fantastic week Sarah and family 🐝 safe
