Red Pontiac Potato Harvest – Grown In 10 Gallon Grow Bags

Red Pontiac Potatoes are one of three types of potatoes that we grew this year. Growing them in 10 gallon grow bags worked out pretty well for us. The other two types of potatoes that we grew were Purple Majesty, and Kennebec. Each type has it’s pros and cons, but overall, they all did pretty well for us. As of right now, I plan to grow potatoes in the 10 gallon grow bags again next year. If you’ve ever grown Red Pontiac potatoes, let us know how they did for you. Thanks for watching!

  1. I appreciate this!! Instead of a grow bag I have heard of putting a heavy duty black plastic bag into a cardboard box.. making some drainage holes in the plastic.. and cardboard.. I think there is a youtube video… out there in the youtubeverse

  2. Good Morning – This is my second attempt at growing potatoes and I use 7 gallon bags with not great results so I will be moving up to 10 gallon next year and adding sulfur at planting. I love Pontiac reds but might try some of the other varieties you suggested if I can find them. Do you always use "seed" potatoes or plant what you can get from the grocery store? I have grown both and really see no difference in production with organic potatoes. I do have wind issues and my plants can get 5 ft tall requiring supports. Maybe I am giving them too much nitrogen and not enough p-k. Have a nice weekend – cool and rainy here in VA.

  3. Awesome harvest; some very good sized potatoes you’ve got there. Hope you’re enjoining the weekend. Cheers!

  4. Morning! How many seed potatoes did you put in a grow bag? I had really good results this year growing my hokkaido pumpkin in a 20 gallon grow bag. I bought those grow bags off Amazon this year after seeing how successful you've been, I need to do potatoes like that next year. Usually its too early to work the soil here when we need to plant which I believe is around Easter.

  5. Good morning. That was a pretty good harvest I think the grow bags soil stays fluffy for lack of a better word. Rather than planting in the ground where it could be much harder and compacted. That's just a guess.
I made my own "grow bag" by making a PVC frame and using a cloth laundry bag inside the frame. I also planted in the ground right next to the bag as an experiment to see which one does better. They're both growing well but the "grow bag ' plants are much taller than the ones in the ground. I guess I'll know in a few months. Take care and have a wonderful weekend.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

  6. Thanks to you I've added grow bags to my Christmas list. Keeping them watered and not having washout had always been my issue with potato growing systems. Still have the 50 gallon recycled tire type which had the problems mentioned. No deep frying allowed at our house, I'm the maid and refuse to clean up that mess!

  7. Moles and Voles destroyed about 40% – 50% of my in ground potatoes this year. It's grow bags for me from now on. I don't mind sharing a little bit these buggers are getting greedy!!

  8. I don’t know the kind of potatoes I plant because they come from the grocery store. But I’m just planting a small amount just to not waste them. But I enjoy the fresh potatoes when I harvest them.

  9. Good harvest, i just reuse my 25L plastic compost/potting mix bags as my growing bags, although i might try some fabric grow bags soon!

  10. I grew Red Pontiac and Yukon Gold in 10 gal grow bags this year. First time growing in bags, and I was pleased with the harvests. I plan on growing more this year, as it is easy to line the bags along the outside of my raised beds and still have a nice walkway. Raking leaves, composting, and mulching today now that our Kansas winds have died down a little (fortunately my non-gardening neighbor's leaves blew into my yard 😄).

  11. What do you use for media? I did potatoes this year in containers for the first time and they really failed to thrive but I couldn't pin down a disease cause.
