Nikon D500 Backyard Bird Photography with the 200-500 Lens!

I do bird photography from my back porch using my beloved old Nikon D500 and the Nikkor 200-500 telephoto zoom lens. I end up bagging several photos that I liked of both songbirds and chipmunks.

  1. Great shots as always! You may want to consider buying CarePak on the new R7. It covers accidental damage!

  2. Thanks Phil for sharing another wonderful video like, I always enjoy your videos, specially the birds, keep up with the awesome content πŸ¦β€οΈπŸ‘

  3. Nice video Phil as always!! I had that gear and I sold it, I wish I didn't. The D500 is a great camera, I believe my best bird photos using Nikon were with the D500. I still have the D850 and the Z6, but I miss my D500. Thanks for the video and greetings!!

  4. u got z50 and zfc why u not use that camera. How u feel about af speed using z camera vs d500 ?

  5. beautiful video, once i had the D7200 with this lens, also used it with the z50 it insanely sharp. never used it without tripod it is so heavy. Thanks for the great shot.

  6. Loved it! I always enjoy a good ol dust off the old gear and see what we can do episode. Looking forward to the R6ii content, but you better not put me in more debt 😀 πŸ˜’ 🀣.

  7. Hey Phil, I understand why you moved away from Nikon to Canon. Canon (and Sony) AF is so much better than Nikon for bird, sports and wildlife photography. I currently own the Nikon Z50 with the kit lenses and the Viltrox 23 mm lens. I was thinking of changing to Canon R7, but find that Canon RF lens offering is really limited and expensive. Also the Z50 is a great travel camera. Waiting for Nikon to introduce a D500 replacement or Z50 mark II with similar AF to Canon and Sony.

  8. I still love my D500 I wish it had animal eye detect but other than that me personally I couldn’t ask for a better camera. It does everything I want or ask of it.

  9. Great shots! The D500 holds up well! I still have and shoot with the 200-500 on my Z6ii. It is heavy. My arms were aching at the airshow but was worth it to get the shots!

  10. Wow, sounds strange to hear that equipment as described as β€œoldie but goodie β€œ, but I guess time moves on. I have still hung on to my 200-500 and it actually seems to perform better on my Z6ll

  11. Hi Phill, I still shoot the D500 but for birds most of the time it is paired with the 500 PF lens. Much lighter than the 200-500 and super sharp. Occasionally miss not being able to zoom, but for me the weight is more important.

  12. I hate it when FedEx texts me that they cannot deliver my item because of not having the code to get into the neighborhood. We do not have a gate at the entrance to my neighborhood. Actually there are two entrances. So what this really means is that we don't have time to deliver so we shall see ya later! Cheers!

  13. Hi Phil, it is good to see your Nikon gear in action. Thanks for sharing why you have also invested in Canon equipment because I was wondering, like many others I'm sure. I do enjoy your photos and storytelling using all of the camera systems, but I have to say, as a Nikon owner myself, I favour your work with Nikon above the rest. I hope you've recovered fully from your fall too. All the best!

  14. Nice video! I love the Carolina Wrens and the Chickadees who frequent my backyard. I sold my D500 when I got the Z9. My favorite combo right now for birding is the Z9 & the 500pf.

  15. I've been getting a good arm workout carrying the 200-500 around on my Z9, it's also a very heavy combination! I have a monopod but I tend to walk around forests and I found it limiting when I need a quick shot. I've been enjoying the eye tracking on the Z9 but haven't compared it directly against an R7.

  16. Thanks Phil for sharing your experience with great results… just love my D500 so I always like to hear & see videos where this camera is used…. cheers from Australia πŸ˜€
