GIANT Cushaw Squash Harvest | Harvesting From Our Container Garden

Giant Vegetables – Cushaw Squash ! Harvesting our giant Cushaw Squash from our container garden. Tina has been so eager to harvest the green striped cushaw growing by the chicken coop. Also known as the Sweet Potato Squash or Green Pumpkin, these squash were cultivated nearly 7000 years ago in Mesoamerica. Later, they were grown by the Hopi Indians in the southwestern states. Today, so few people grow it that it is considered endangered of ever reaching widespread cultivation and may one day be lost. It was grown by Jefferson at Monticello, and Abraham Lincoln grew a white variety. If you are considering growing them, please know that they are immune to squash vine borers but their vines can also reach 75 feet long – so they need room to grow. We may have seeds available soon. This one is a giant ! Enjoy !

  1. Thats one Huge squash!! Enjoyed the history of it. Now I will be on the hunt for them seeds.

  2. I had to come over to get a look at your giant cushaw from James' seeds. I saw his cushaw last fall when I visited. I almost need to drive back over to see James and Brenda just to smell and taste that cushaw butter.

  3. Them seeds are worth gold. Especially if we get into a depression. Would feed a lot of mouths. Love the history thanks will try growing some when I get me a patch of land. Thanks again for all your informative videos.

  4. My mom in law made the BEST cushaw pies!! We all use her recipe, including my granddaughters sister in law..it has butter and maple syrup in. We used to burn our tongue on them fresh out of oven…the second pie we let cool lol. About 5 years ago we figured the easiest way to cook them to puree them

  5. I love learning about old varieties that aren't popular anymore it's so interesting. I love the idea of passing around seed and getting old vegetables and fruit growing again more places.

  6. Wow that was really fun to watch Tina go after that squash it was a joy to see I showed this to my Boy Scouts troop 404 and it got them all excited to give gardening a try so we are going to start working on there gardening merit badge this spring if possible it would be really fun for them if you have any extra seeds to send them just one seed to put in their garden it would be a really great surprise for them to get one from your show the next one I’m going to show to them is your one you did on how you make your soil but I don’t think 🤔 they have black cow mix here in California but it will challenge them to figure out how to make their own I can’t wait to see them give that a try they are pretty smart when they work together as a group they make me very proud

  7. Tape measure? You should be relieved, they measure in feet (or meters)! Now if she had a micrometer…😄

  8. This is the best Tina video! Your smile and excitement is wonderful. Lol….walks off with ALL 3 !! Adding these to our homestead for next year. Let us know if you decide to donate some seed we have the room!!

  9. Grew some of these squash in SE Texas and the vines took over the garden but got one 35# squash off of one plant and a couple 20#ers off the other. They just took up soooooo much garden space. Great eating though.

  10. Do you have problems with vine borers in your area?
What a great harvest! I've never grown that variety, are they good keepers and do they make good pies?

  11. Thank you for this video. I have just learnt about your video. Where did you buy your cushaw squash seeds from ? My butternut and acorn squashes have been devasted by vine borer and I cannot find seeds for cushaw. Please advise!

  12. Grew these from Hoss Tools….the took over the yard….got tons of huge squash. They average 21 lbs. each….need an axe and hammer to get into them …lol 😆

  13. My late motherinlaw was from birmingham and she baked a pie called sugarstick , from my research cushaw squash must have been the squash she used , i grew some cushaw and made a pie ised 15 oz cooked squash and used the libby pumplin recipe , came out much better than the Hubbard squash in libbys much lighter and tastier bob

  14. In South Texas we use them while still tender. We brown chicken peel the squash and cube it. Add it to the chicken and add spices. Pepper, cumin garlic and salt. Some people add tomatoes. But we never did.
The mature squash we used for making empandas. Like turn overs filled with the sweetened and spiced squash. Delicious. And yes we saved the seeds as they aren't available anywhere that I know of. I had one that was 22 pounds.

  15. I was just reading on these this morning because so I need to know when to pick them. 1st time to grow them . Anyway they are supposed to get from 10 – 20 lbs

  16. No one seems to know this out in the internet world, but Cushaw is the phonetic pronunciation of the real name of the Upper Creek Indians of North Georgia Mountains and NE Alabama. The Coosa River is named after them. The Cushaw was developed from a native wild squash. Being that I live in the Georgia Mountains, my Cushaw vines grow like Kudzu. One of my fruits this year was 43 pounds! It would feed me for a year.
