Cheap and easy hothouse | DIY garden projects | Gardening Australia

Propagating your own plants from seeds and cuttings is a cheap and cheerful way to get your garden going. The secret to success is not allowing the plants to dry out, or become waterlogged and rot prior to roots developing. This can be tricky, but Millie’s secret to success is simple – make a mini hothouse!

00:49 How to make a mini hothouse

Pot up your tip cuttings into an appropriate mix in a pot

Grab four old wooden chopsticks, small sticks or small bamboo plant stakes and place these at equal distances around the inner rim of the pot, so they are sitting at least 10cm higher than to pot

Using a recycled plastic bag, slip this over the top of the sticks and pull down as far as it will go without tearing

Using a rubber band, secure the plastic bag to the pot – Millie has found this is easiest to do from the bottom of the pot rather than over the top!

Once the bag is secured by the rubber band, pull the bag away just slightly, take a deep breath and blow, filling the bag with air.
