Backyard Garden

Butterfly Gardening | Backyard Garden Projects

In this butterfly gardening video, I begin several backyard butterfly garden projects and organize my collection of potted milkweed that I use to feed caterpillars. I release a few Monarch butterflies, make plans for more garden space, and begin making the caterpillar nursery more user friendly. There is always something fun to do, which is why butterfly gardening is such a fabulous way to spend my time. Thank you for watching. Subscribe to my channel to follow along with my backyard gardening adventures. Have a fabulous Day!!

  1. Your problem with the rats was the same problem I was having. They were eating my milkweed to little sticks. So I moved them away from the edge of the property into the open. They are growing back. But now something is eating "bullet holes" in the leaves. Not caterpillars. Another mystery.

  2. I had no idea those were lady bug larva, I shoo them away because their always in my container garden but good to know now.

  3. I have released a lot of male monarch butterflies but have never seen one as beautifully colored as the first one you released in your video. His color was dark, rich and even throughout both sets of wings which is rare on a male monarch butterfly but common on a female monarch butterfly. The second male you released is what I usually see which a slight fading of color on the wings located near the lower section of the abdomen.

Well, we are finally getting lots of rain here in northeast Illinois. With our drought ending maybe my milkweed will perk up.

Today I did spot a monarch butterfly on my Speedwell (Veronica) plant so I snuck outside and sat on an old rickety wood bench to observe the monarch for a few minutes before it flew away. I hope it was a female and laid lots of eggs on my milkweed.

  4. I’m kinda jealous I’m back home in Colorado I’m missing my Chunky Caterpillars 🐛 in the Keys. I have planted more milkweed in my back yard here but our temperatures dropped in the last many days, no I’m not complying cause with that temperature drop we have gotten much need rain especially in the mountains where we had fires burning already. I’m just missing raising Butterfly’s at the moment 🥸 plus I LOVE your garden, it is turning out AMAZING! Your videos also make my day so please take us along on all your fun adventures. You totally inspire me 😃 so thank you!
