The Sneeboer Ladies Spade (aka short-handled Border Spade) is the tool that changed everything for me. I learned about working smarter, not harder, about how a good tool can help you garden longer (for hours and years), and how investing a great tool that will outlive you is so much better than rebuying cheap tools over and over again.
There seems to be some discrepancy over what this tool is called. Some places seem to call it just the Border Spade (which, honestly, is better than Ladies Spade), but offer it in two different handle lengths.

At $174, it’s an investment.
It’s the perfect height for me (I’m 5’2”) and I would guess that it’s about right if you’re 5’6” or under. If you’re taller, check out the Border Spade (same design, longer handle).
