Designing and Creating a No Flower Garden – Part 1

So, I have decided to create a new garden and this time I am going for one without any flowers. No flowers you say, surely that will be boring? Yes, no flowers and I think no flowers can be just as beautiful as a garden with flowers, Think of all the different shades and colours of leaves you can have and all the different types and shapes of leaves. So, join me as I start the process of designing and creating what I am going to call “The Contemplation Garden”

  1. A Black Laced Ederberry would be beautiful, although they can grow to be very large.

  2. It does not keep its leaves but I got a coral bark Japanese Maple from some man who has his own nursery near Asheville, NC and it was a really good price. In the winter the branches are amazing bright red. It is growing very slowly. In 5 years it is up to 3.5’. When I remember the place’s name I will tell you.

  3. variegated dogwood- variegated foliage during the summer and red stems in the fall and winter, ornamental grasses, nice to sit and watch the blades sway in the summer breeze and tall seed spikes in the winter

  4. A new garden is always fun! I’ve got 2 plant ideas.
Blue berry bushes – mine turn bright red in fall and of course they’re productive with flowers that aren’t very noticeable
Solomon’s Seal – herbaceous perennial mid height shoots come up and arch with green leaves off each side. It does flower, but again very minimal and not noticeable. Spreads slowly via rhizomes
