Images are typically saved in jpg – a compressed format. The compression algorithm compares nearby pixels and, if they are similar enough, they get converted to be the same, reducing the overall “information” in the picture. However, when a scene has lots of detail (edges, patterns, and hues), the resulting jpg will still be large – this photo was 10 MB compared to the usual 4-6 MB. I wrote all this because I downloaded this image from my wife’s camera and had to wait longer than usual…which gave me time to think about why.
