Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I have had milk cow 15 years. Always save colostrum for calves only…. Too salty for me!! I don’t like the taste!! Liquid Gold for calves for sure but I’m not adventurous enough to drink it!

  2. Your banana's might survive if you HEAVILY mulch them. Colostrum is a texture issue with most people. It's like drinking a runny custard, but it tastes great. Never cooked with it..

  3. Thank you for bringing this up! Raw milk creeps me out. I know all the benefits, but I still can't bring myself to drink it. Maybe if it was from my own cow and not a neighbors or something, I don't know. It's something I want to get over though!

  4. I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I'm thinking at some point you said that you have or possibly have autoimmune disease. I'm curious if the echinacea has a negative effect on that for you? I have multiple autoimmune diseases and echinacea put me in the hospital.

  5. I've never been hesitant to eat any food I've grown, but I can say with absolute certainty that I wouldn't be partaking of any colostrum 😂 ( I'd probably freeze dry it for future use, should a calf need it)

  6. I remember about 10 or 15 years ago I was on a health kick and someone told me about colostrum pills that I could buy at the Health food store. I tried them along with a bunch of garlic and other things to try and make myself healthy. I do not know if you can still buy them. So in theory, I guess you could drink or eat the colostrum.

  7. I have been feeling that same feeling lately. I think the expression, meh will suffice 😂 I feel very meh.
I want a cow so bad I’m trying to go slow but it’s so hard not to just dive head first.

  8. I remember my great grandmother keeping homemade colostrum vanilla ice cream in the freezer for when anyone was starting to get sick. She didnt have cows by the time i was born, but she'd buy milk and colostrum from the amish farmers down the road.

  9. Real food has ALWAYS come dirty. Something people need to realize. I have been eating food from a garden in some form or another since I was probably 6 years old, (or before – too old to remember – LOL). So that's – a long time. But I can see where someone who has not been raised that way could find it odd, weird, disgusting, etc. That's called ignorance, (or naivety), chose your word here. LOL. Glad you came around to the bright side of life. (Somebody will get those last words – Monty Python).

  10. Miah that was wonderful for your boys to hear you speak of your wife so wonderfully. Parents teach, and boy did you just teach your boys. Thank you

  11. I have to admit the first few eggs from my hens I was a little hesitant. I had a traumatic experience with my first crop of broccoli and cabbage worms. I haven't grown broccoli since. lol.

  12. I just saw a comment about saving it for you skin flair ups, and think that's a great idea. I suffer with horrible psoriasis and wonder if soaking in some or a lotion with
    colostrum would help

  13. So when my son was younger we had a horrendous run in with bacterial infections, pneumonias, antibiotics and just major health complications that were life threatening. I decided as an experiment to feed him raw goat colostrum as a desperate way of fixing his gut health. He gets probiotics as well but it honestly didnt seem to be working very fast. We put chocolate syrup in it. He drank about a gallon of it before he decided he didn’t like it anymore. But he has not had to have antibiotics since… it’s been over 5 years. Girl – it’s worth the experiment. Seriously. I also wonder about rubbing it onto inflamed skin… breast milk helps, why wouldn’t colostrum?

  14. Learn new things every day! I read several other posts. I this freeze drying would be very intetesting. I thought of the saving to bottle feed if needed but how long before a new calf. May not be practical. How are your health issues improving? Getting good data. Finding absolute no more this or that? Or can you add back in foods yet? Take care. 💙💜😎

  15. You have a wedding ring tattoo?? Idk how I’ve never noticed that! I’ve wanted one forever because my ring size constantly changes. Are you happy with it??

  16. When I was young my grandma's friend had cows and it was always the best time of the year when they had calfs because that when my grandma would get colostrum from them and make the traditional Scandinavian dessert "kalvdans" directly translated to calf-dance. It is a sweet desert containing sugar so ot might not fit your diet right now, but it is delicious and dates back to at least the 1600 here I Sweden! Worth looking up for the future at least

  17. Walked outside this morning, broke a piece of broccoli leaf off a plant and started munching. Then I thought “oh, I should probably have washed that” second thought was “nope! If the bugs enjoyed where the holes were, it’s gotta be good”…….I have come far. 😜

  18. Jess, we did one of two things with colostrum on our dairy – excess to pigs or chickens, OR we fermented it in barrels to feed our calves, (we augmented it with milk replacer. Calves weren't left with mom very long – handfed until weaning.) The calves did well with this mixture..Interested in learning what you try with it!

  19. We take an immune booster with bovine colostrum from standard process! I think it has helped keep my kids immune system strong.

  20. Do you pick the asparagus berries to plant? I always figured it might take years to produce, but might be fun to plant the seeds in some location that might be fun to forage some day. One nearby vineyard plants asparagus in among the grape vines.

  21. If you think you might be getting the flu, there is a new prescription pill that if you take it in the first 48 hours, it will knock out the flu symptoms. It is supposed to be much better than Tamiflu.
Have you asked Justin Rhodes about the colostrum milk? I seem to remember in a video he did just after one of the cows gave birth, that he was really excited about the colostrum milk because it was some thing he really loved. So the Rhodes family might have some recipes.

  22. In our neck of the woods (coastal northern California) people think colostrum is awesome for all it's amazing nutritional benefits. We used to share a few cows in our community and the colostrum was prized. You can even buy it at our community local natural foods store. It's $$$$$! I always wondered about making ice cream about of it, but I don't know what if anything that does to the nutritional make up 💕
