Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Thanks for the video. Your method simplifies this process. I can't find low sodium broth in the store so this is a good way to enjoy broth without the added sodium and additives.

  2. May you and yours have a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving! And all who reads this!….

  3. We love you here! Thank you for giving me the confidence. God has used you tremendously… please direct me where I can see your video about your preserving the eggs? God bless you!

  4. As far as the bones left over, how about treating the dogs that protect your homestead outside? Or is that contraindicated or not good practice for those types of dogs?

  5. I HAVE to put onions in my broths, and all my meats, to reduce that ick smell from meat cooking. It started when I was pregnant with one of my nine children. I couldn't stand the smell of cooking meat but adding onions really did help a lot. Watching you pour water on made me think of all the videos I watch where people are putting pot filler taps in their kitchens. I would love one when I redesign, but all I can picture is springing a leak behind the wall!!! LOL. Tempting, but not convinced.

  6. That 2 am reminder of “oh yeah, that’s happening right now!” 🍜 😂 then slowly cracking the kitchen window 😂

  7. After watching your previous video about roaster ovens, I looked up prices online and they were more expensive than I expected BUT less than a week later, someone offered a 22 quart roaster oven, used only once, in my local Buy Nothing group and I got it! I'm so excited!

  8. The mornings when I'm making broth I always wake up absolutely starving. I love that smell though, so comforting to wake up to.

  9. I use spent bones from broth=making to make bonemeal fertilizer! I dry them out in the oven after they're used for broth, then pound with a hammer into small pieces.

  10. Just like my grandmother, I make turkey broth the day after Thanksgiving in the same roaster pan that I cooked our turkey in using the carcass. This is the third year that we will be eating a turkey that I raised and harvested myself. I hope you and your family have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

  11. I received one almost 10 years ago in a secret Santa swap with my in laws and it single handedly the hardest working item in my kitchen right next to my stand mixer. I make stock ALL the time in it and I also love it for reducing my maple syrup the. Finish it on the stove top. LOVE THIS ITEM!!!!

  12. Thanks Jess for the tip to roast the beef bones before you simmer them. Enjoy your bone broth! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!🦃🥧

  13. I stopped using my crock pot when I got an instant pot. I’m putting turkey bones in today for broth and it only takes 30 minutes.

  14. Wondering if you have heard of Dr Natasha Campbell. She created a diet for gut healing that cured her sons autism. She says meat stock is more healing for the gut. As are animal fats. She has a book the GAPS diet, very informative about complete healing of the gut.

  15. what are your thoughts on instant pot bone broth? I like it for small batches that I'd be using quickly

  16. So crazy, I live near Seven Sons Farm where you get your bones!
Also is this the same method you use for chicken bone broth. I feel like I cook my broth low for 24-48hrs and my bones aren’t soft enough to smash. Any tips??

  17. So you won't think I'm weird for taking the turkey carcass home after Thanksgiving?! It's like winning a prize!

  18. I love roaster ovens! Because food does stink, I roast everything on my enclosed porch. No PETS allowed! I would love to see more of your from scratch recipes Jess. Happy Thanksgiving and much love from Texas!

  19. When we want to feed the bones to dogs or pigs or what have you, we pressure cook them till they crumble into powder. Then they are fine for calicum additive for chickens or dogs in their dog food, or for pigs or whatever. However, since we don't have a homestead atm, and all we have is chickens, not pigs or dogs, and the raccoons have to be bribed to leave our chooks alone, we toss all the leftover bones down the hill away from the chooks for the raccoons to rummage through. They love it. The chickens get the meat bits and fat and skin, etc…

  20. I totally get that “beef smell”. Another odd cooking scent that I’ve got comments about is cooking down pumpkin for future pies and other baking delights
