CITRUS Pruning Tip for MORE FRUIT

If you are growing citrus, it is important to check for any branches growing below the graft union and remove them. These “suckers” are from the rootstock.⁣⁣⁣⁣ They will take energy away from developing fruit.
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Because most citrus is grafted onto rootstock, the fruit you want the tree to produce will only come from branches above that graft line.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
The rootstock type is chosen for desirable growing characteristics such as size, frost, or drought resistance, not for the fruit. ⁣⁣⁣⁣Removing suckers will increase the energy available to the tree (more fruit!)
⁣⁣⁣⁣
If the branch is larger than the one in this video, use clean, sharp pruners to remove it. ⁣⁣⁣⁣

  1. Thank you! I put all 3 of my citrus in the ground earlier this year too. I was wondering if I should/could get rid of a few branches that sprang out from almost nowhere. I'll pay extra attention to the root stock!
