Stop Using a Spade!

That’s right, using a fork is so much better for your garden and for your back too. Yes, a spade or shovel can be useful for moving piles of soil or sand on occasion, but for most tasks a fork can do what a spade can with less effort and more efficiency, while also being a friend to worms and tackling those pesky weeds. Use the FORKS!

  1. Totally agree. Haha, the fork you snapped in the video is the same as the one I’ve been using for years. Thanks Ben

  2. Tbh I often put off projects that involve using the spade, like transplanting fruit bushes and other large plants, because I really hate the idea of accidentally cutting through earthworms. I will get myself a fork!! Thanks so much for the tip!

  3. So interesting to learn that all of the European earthworms in US are actually from the early British settlers. It makes me wonder if there was some other earth transformer before they got to north America.

  4. Look at that soil! I'm envious! Here in south Florida we have to use massive amounts of wood chips over our sugar sand

  5. A couple problems, earth worms are and exotic invasive in my neck of the woods, a fork is lousy for digging tree holes, and rocks. Lots and lots of rocks!

And I prefer no till as a better method, my spading forks have not forgiven me for the transition….

  6. Interesting! I unfortunately live in the US where invasive jumping worms are out competing the already invasive European worms so keeping them around is actually not a good priority
