Jocko and George Monsoor. George Monsoor is the father of Michael Anthony Monsoor (April 5, 1981 – September 29, 2006), a United States Navy SEAL who was killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom and posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.[1] He enlisted in the United States Navy in 2001 and graduated from Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training BUD/S class 250 in 2004. After further training he was assigned to Delta Platoon, SEAL Team 3.

Delta Platoon was sent to Iraq in April 2006 and assigned to train Iraqi Army soldiers in Ramadi. Over the next five months, Monsoor and his platoon frequently engaged in combat with insurgent forces. On September 29, 2006, an insurgent threw a grenade onto a rooftop where Monsoor and several other SEALs and Iraqi soldiers were positioned. Monsoor quickly smothered the grenade with his body, absorbing the resulting explosion and saving his comrades from serious injury or death. Monsoor died about 30 minutes later from wounds caused by the grenade explosion.

  5. my grandfather survived the battle of midway, I have no idea how, I never got to meet him but he survived that battle and brought home a japanese knife from that battle, I wish my loser family didn't get rid of it when my grandmother died

  6. A story everyone should hear. An amazing person and family and if I wasn’t already crying hearing Jocko get chocked up put me over the edge

  7. Fantastic conversation. Michael was the friend we all want in our lives. Thank you for your service and for paying the ultimate sacrifice. Proud Dad!

  8. Men like this are true heroes. Not actors or singers or other celebrities that people admire. What a special human, thank you for your service.

  9. Great podcast. Mr. Mansoor's perspective on what his father endured as an anti-aircraft gunner on a WWII aircraft carrier is spot on. There were .50 caliber batteries, 20mm batteries, and 5 inch batteries all in close proximity to one another.

The noise levels alone were off the charts as far as where damage to human hearing begins on the auditory scale. Add in the concussion from constant exposure to 5" shells going off only a few yards away.

Then factor in the self-imposed mental pressure to try and stop every single one of the Japanese kamikaze pilots who were perfectly capable of heavily damaging, and possibly even sinking a large naval ship.

It's no wonder so many WWII naval vets came back with PTSD.

  10. I’ve read many books about heroic soldiers. I’m not sure I’ve heard more reverence than that applied to Mike. He had an impact that seems larger than most.

  11. This is the most beautiful crushing thing I've ever heard. I tried to go to bed listening, but I had to call my dad and my buddy to make sure everything is ok. Dangit, you know, I miss my friends. Bless you all out there that know what I mean. And thanks for the village it took for all this…

  12. The final thoughts were a real gut check. No words are sufficient for the loss. I had tears streaming. No greater love…

  13. I can not wait to squeeze my son. This was an amazing video and you can feel the emotions threw the screen.

  14. What a powerful podcast, you have many but this one was special to you and I could tell. You honor his memory and all who have served. 🙏

  15. I can’t imagine how pissed and proud I’d be of my son for jumping on a grenade. I pray to god I never have to find out.

  16. Excellent Podcast Jocko, One of the best I have ever listened to.. Michael Monsoor was a true hero!!! His Dad is way cool!

  17. “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived.” – General George Patton

  18. No doubt where Michael got some of his outstanding qualities. George is a hell of a dad, hell of a man. Thanks for sharing the joy and heartache of your son’s too short life. I too was in tears and felt a great sense of loss for the world.

  19. I can understand how even the Medal of Honor and having a war ship named after his son could be a burden on the family..constant media, travel , dealing with Navy officials became draining when really the family would prefer to be left alone

  20. Can you provide an Amazon link in the description for purchase of the book? This would help generate revenue for the family and be a great help to the cause. Thank you!

  21. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts,

by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen

  22. Thank you to Mr. Monsoor and Jocko for sharing this with us. I've had the fortune to meet members of Task Unit Bruiser and hear Mikey's story from them. Hearing it from his father's and commanding officer's point of view was very emotional.

Thank you both for your service and again for sharing this conversation with us.
