This is a soldier’s human drama story, unique to Shugoro Yamamoto’s works.
Isozouemonn (Tsuyoshi Kato) was a ronin (masterless samurai) and broke, who lived in a Choya (cheap apartment) in Okazakijoka town with his sick wife, Sugie (Ai Kanzaki). He was also a good swordsman who had taught swordsmanship in Akita a long time ago. He takes such good care of his wife that he is called a wife-loving man. He got involved in a conflict for succession because he pretended to become an officer to please her wife.

great movie! chivalry, unconditional love, compassion for not killing another human being and not rushing to kill other party before the true intentions were uncover. don't get to see the chivalry act nowadays which is I envy so much about Japanese samurai in the feudal japan.
Very idealistic but nice to watch
a top movie again… mr, kurata and all other pieces together about this work also are great…
