Stuff You’ll Need:
1 ball each black yarn, and a colour-phasing yarn, both Aran or Worsted weight. I used Hobbii’s Carnival yarn in shade no. 04 for the rainbow, & some old black stuff I had lying around. If starting in black, a small amount of lighter coloured scrap yarn is recommended for the practice swatch.
Needles: 2 sets of 16″/40cm circular needles, sizes 4.50mm/US 7 & 5mm/US 8, plus a set of double pointed needles in 5mm/US 8 – I strongly recommend getting wooden or plastic needles for your first project; avoid the slipperiness of metal!
Darning needle
Small piece of bright scrap yarn to make stitch/round marker. A small elastic band or similar will do just fine!
Safety pin
Scissors

Sizing: – I find this pattern quite stretchy & versatile, though as with everything it’s yarn dependant – with this yarn I was getting 4.5 stitches wide per inch, & just over 7 stitches tall per inch, in plain knit on the larger needle, but gauge isn’t something I generally worry about with hats – this one stays nicely on my little pea-head but also fits male heads. If you think you definitely need a very big hat though, you can cast on 90 stitches at the beginning, rather than 84, then follow the pattern as normal, making sure to do the full number of rounds, not the short option! Good luck! 😀

Pattern:
Cast on 84 stitches in black, using the smaller size 7/4.50mm circular needles.
Rounds 1 – 13: *Knit 1, Purl 1* – repeat to end.
Switch to larger circular needles here, as shown, and continue in plain knit, following the given striping instructions, or creating your own for the same number of rounds: /remember to cross your yarn, as shown, every time the yarn colour changes!/
5 rounds rainbow
1 round black
4 rounds rainbow
–If you want a smaller, less slouchy beanie, omit the next two lines or 5 rounds. If not, continue to follow pattern, ignoring / marks!–
/2 rounds black
3 rounds rainbow/
4 rounds black
5 rounds rainbow
2 rounds black
3 rounds rainbow
1 round black
4 rounds rainbow
2 rounds black
2 rounds rainbow
/Total: 38 plain knit rounds for the full-sized hat, 33 for the less slouchy version/
DECREASES – switch to double-pointed needles whenever, during the decreases, it gets uncomfortable, as demonstrated:
Round 1: In black yarn, *knit 4, k2tog* – repeat to end
Rounds 2 & 3: in rainbow yarn, knit plain
Round 4: still using rainbow yarn, *knit 3, k2tog* – repeat to end
Round 5: In rainbow, knit plain
6: In black, knit plain
7: in black, *knit 2, k2tog*, repeat to end
8: In black, knit plain
9: in rainbow, *knit 1, k2tog*, repeat to end
10: in rainbow, k2tog to end
11: in black, k2tog to end
Cut both yarns to weavable length, tuck rainbow yarn inside hat, then cinch off remaining stitches with black yarn, & weave in ends as shown.
Now insert head into hat, & feel proud! 😀

  1. It's time for me to try knitting again!! I suck at it but I think I got too ambitious with hard projects. Try try again.

  2. I've never been interested in knitting….but….it's you, combined with a beenie-tutorial 😮 ….dorian, you got me hooked on knitting 🤯😂

  3. When I'd tell people I got cramps in my hands before going to bed last night… they might think of the wrong thing. 🤔

  4. How uncanny another creator i watch just uploaded a sweater she made and almost did an evil eye pattern as an offering! She went with a bone theme instead though lol

  5. You know I found your channel a few weeks ago because of your knitting vídeo😍
I loved your style and then got obsessed with your stories.
I feel you are my long time friend already😂

  6. Dorian, love your style and tutorial, also you’re a big inspiration for me.
Can you, please, make a tutorial about knitting some plushies, like maybe the cute bats you have in your room? I’ve always wanted to learn how to knit, but i’ve only mastered crocheting three years ago.

  7. So so cool 😀 I've made my first hat last year, I'd very much make another one. This will be useful. Your yarn is very pretty.

  8. Hey dorian this doesn't really have much to do with the vid but just so you know i picked up crochet thanks to you suggesting it and I'm so happy. It's such a fun hobby and just like you said- it's a fun fidget tool that spews out clothes at the end!
    Love you xxx

  9. This is so much fun and I love the "Evil Eye" protection at the back! I have been wanting to cast on a simple little something new and this is it! Love you Dorian!!

  10. yayyyy I love all your knitting videos. I know how to knit a hat, but I love watching you anyways.

  11. Idk what it is but u r the only person who explains how to do this, so I can understand. u r a very good teacher (esp to those of us who r autistic)

  12. A video from Dorian was exactly what I needed today. I've been struggling with chronic pain all day and now I can just relax and enjoy a chilled out creative video. Thank you so so much.

  13. i also prefer to knit continental but I find the awkward motion you have to do with your left hand to purl very annoying and painful long term so someone recommended the Norwegian purl to me where your left hand stays steady + you don't need to bring the yarn to the front when purling but instead you do a little flourish with your right needle and its honestly been a massive gamechanger for me

  14. I've never really been able to get into knitting or crochet, but I love weaving. If you ever want to try something a little different, check out tablet weaving (also called card weaving). It's something anyone can do with very little investment in setup, no need to purchase a loom or anything, bare minimum setup involves just the tablets/cards, thread/yarn and something to use for a shuttle. Setting up the tablets themselves is a bit of a chore, but once you've got everything going it's very satisfying. You can make belts and decorative trim for other projects, basically your end result is a durable decorative ribbon of material.

Thanks for the tutorial, it was a lot of fun to watch! 🙂

  15. I'm so glad you did this request, the common beginner mistakes are very informative and helpful. Long form content from you is very relaxing to watch !

  16. I love your knitting content, I actually started knitting because of you Dorian <3 I’m so happy to see this tutorial

  17. I woke up today with zero intentions of getting into knitting. Then I turned on your video just to relax and now I need to go out to buy knitting supplies. You explain it in a way that makes me feel like I can do it too.

  18. I’ve never commented. I was always too shy but I’ve been growing so… I just wanted to say thank you. I love your content. You always bring a smile to my face and make me feel less alone in my Nuro-diversity. Your chats, stories, and tutorials aid in my personal healing. Thank you so much, much love and happy wishes!❤

  19. i was just thinking about knitting or crocheting a slouchy hat and now you postet this, ill def try this pattern 🙂

  20. I always feel so dumb for not being able to knit (… I only do embroidery once in a while!) but this rly motivated me to try it out again :3

  21. I’m so fking pumped for this! 😂 I’m a fiber artist of all kinds but I remember one episode you had a Steven west shawl and I squealed! Stitchy Folks Unite!

  22. I knit a lot and I hate the long tail caston 😂 it might be comfier and easier for beginners to use the knit cast on since it’s the same movement you’ll use to knit. Just a suggestion. Might be less stressful for your poor thumb too 😂❤

  23. I’ve been knitting over 45 years and have only this year knitted my first in the round cardigan. It was a shawl collar, over-sized one in super bulky on 9mm needles. Wow heavy but hardly any stitching up. It’s a Christmas prezzie. She better like it! 😂

  24. I have tried many times over the years to learn knitting. I have had multiple friends try to teach me but I just can’t grasp it. I weave wire and can do that easily but knitting is a whole different game. After watching this video I am psyched to give this another go.
