Winter Biochar and Carbon for Lawns

Doc explains the benefits of carbon and biochar and why we add it to improve the soil. Winter is a good time to add it as it takes some time for it to get into the soil.

  1. I’d question the need to use carbon if it’s going to take so much energy to make and the carbon is going to be locked into glass anyway. I know some hydro pellets are made like that in the European waste to energy plants. Volcanic soils might be another alternative.

I do love the quality of that couch lawn.

  2. Hey Doc, what about mulching my leaves? I am 30m S of Charlotte NC and have mostly bermuda on red clay and surrounded by oaks and some other leafy trees. I heard for cool season grass mulching all the leaves is good, as long as you can see some green showing. It seems to be working as I am getting a thin layer of black humus. The last trees fall mid/late December so I am mulching for about 2 months.

  3. Biochar is a oxygen depleted burned/cooked organic matter.

So can I ghetto it and use Texas style charcoal? That’s basically hardwood cooked in the same way. Assuming I can beat it badly to reduce to powder size instead of a tree lump size, of course.

  4. Doc HELP!!!
Did Andersons pre emergent 10 days ago and I’ve got Poa coming up, I’m over here in Newnan. Soil temp still low 60’s.
    Used 10-10-10 + humichar 3 weeks ago.
Poa already after only 1 frost😖😖😖
Please advise. Planning liquid prodiamine next week, 2 weeks after granular

  5. Is there a specific CEC level when you would stop adding Humichar? I came in at 19.5 and still added several bags and will be retesting soon, but am wondering when to be done.

  6. I'm about 4-5 weeks out from when I overseeded. Noticing a lot of clovers popping out, is it ok to go ahead and take care of them now or should i maybe wait another week or two? I'm in middle TN if that matters. Weather is dipping into the 40s for a week, but then we got like two weeks of mid 50s.

Not sure when it basically becomes pointless to try and kill weeds/clover due to them not growing and taking in the herbicide.

  7. Hey Doc, I overseeded in the beginning of Sept and have done twp applications of Anderson’s Starter fertilizer with Mesotrione and one application of PGF complete and Barricade. Looking ahead to the spring, would I be better served applying PGF Complete or PGF Balanced in the spring? I’m located in NJ. Thx for your help and continued success on your new venture.

  8. Can you do a video on what camera you use and what software you use to edit there video's as I like the quality

  9. I live in central Alabama. I have Bermuda grass. I have an armadillo digging in my yard. I have tried armadillo repellent & some diy stuff with no success. Is it too late in the year to put out DuoCide insect control to kill the grubs? Also is it too late to put out Anderson PGF 10-10-10 fertilizer? How would I space these 2 things apart if I can put both out on my lawn.

  10. Doc what is the difference between Andersons "Humichar" vs "Charx" on Amazon?

  11. Hey Doc, I saw that Andersons makes Humichar and CharX as humic and biochar soil amendments. I have not been able to figure out the difference between the two products. Do you know what sets them apart or why you would choose one over the other? Thanks in advance. Love your content.

  12. Question for ya , I'm putting down 80 lbs of humichar on my 2,000 sq ft lawn over the course of this winter so when is enough enough

  13. I hope he wasnt bagging, wasnt picking up the leaves. I love EGO stuff. I bag with ZT2 cub cadet and it gets just about all of em, especially in reverse

  14. Didn’t you say in previous videos you are constantly putting down Green Shocker? Which one is it… biochar and less fertilizer or weekly green shocker?

  15. I have some fescue and as the season has changed, I watch Bermuda pan out. That is amazing that your lawn is still that green. I guess the biochar really works. You are a testament to its benefits

  16. Hey Doc, good to see and here from you my question for you is should I dethatch my Kentucky blue now?? I no it says I should in your calendar but I worry cause it’s so cold in 30’s is that ok.

  17. If planning a next fall full renovation. A. Could the char be mixed with the seed to apply?B. If I apply it through this next year will it’s soil improvement last after a kill? Or would a plastic no Chem kill work better?
