An update on our volunteer potatoes that you all encourage me to keep going. Also what the heck is in my hand! Getting the tubs and a big high tunnel ready for more planting! It’s more important than ever that we keep doing this and growing our own food.

Good morning glory!
I'm hoping to have dirt delivered next month 😬
I can deal with a cooler house in the daytime but can't stand to be cold at night.Same with A/C i can grudgingly ( lol ) take the heat in the day but at night I prefer to be cool.
U can leave some in ground all winter plant about 6 to 8 inches deep
I hope you have glass covers over the fireplace. If not, you're gaining some heat but most of it is going up the chimney. Especially as the fire wanes, it sucks all the warm air out. Covering it and restricting the air flow will give you better fire management, resulting in longer burns from your wood. That's my experience, fwiw.
I'm so ready for cooler weather!!
Hi Jill! Amazing potatoes you harvested. I was just looking at the wrapper from some asparagus I bought at the Kroger near me, and it's from PERU! Why can't the U.S. grow Asparagus in greenhouses?
Nice little potato harvest. Energy prices are ridiculous right now. Our last bill showed we paid more for delivery than actual usage. $56 for usage and $65 for TDU delivery.
That okra stalk is incredible. I have a couple that might rival it, but I don't think I can match it. My okra is still drying on the plants so it will be a bit before I can get them out. Glad to see you were able to find some viable compost. It's become so hard to find any without all the chemical residue. Thanks for the update!
Looking at our future temperatures through the 22nd after Thursday we will be in the low 60's for highs and 30's to 40's for low. Think this may be the last upper 70's we are going to see for awhile….making it a cool November as predicted. Lucky growth of volunteer potatoes. Our A/C just went on the blink and a tech coming this afternoon…as long as it doesn't effect our heat we will be happy. Hope we won't have to turn the heat on just yet. We have to figure out our fireplace in the home we bought this past end of June.
Do you drill drain holes in the bottom of your tubs?
That is one thing we don't have that I really wish we had – a fireplace. I love them but we don't have one.
Those potatoes look good. They are very nice potatoes. You should save a few of those and have them for Thanksgiving or even Christmas since they are a "gift", being volunteers. I always see volunteers as gifts from God.

Good morning, Jill. Exactly where are you located in the DFW area? Are you close to Medlothian or Venus. I live between Mansfield a Rendon. The reason I am asking is I need a gardening guideline for the weather and planting. Most of the USDA maps have us in zone 8 but I thought the DFW area was zone 7. It is so confusing. Love your channel and all the encouragement and helpful advice.
That is an Impressive okra stem!!! It almost looks like a stem for Brussel sprouts. It’s in low 30s and snowing where I’m at today. This is our second snow for this winter or aren’t we still in fall…? It certainly does not feel that way out here. Your garden still looks full and luscious. Thanks you for the updates. God bless💕
Yeah for taters. I got zero taters. I bought some, but i feel cheated. On the other hand,we have some well fed ants. We,re going fishing again. The food banks here are so desperate that they want the Crappie, and deer too. Tomorrow will be too windy to go,so hoping we do good today.
Wow that’s awesome potato harvest Jill. All your gardens look amazing
Jill, that okra log is impressive! I wonder if it'd root if you laid it kinda longwise in potting mix? I bet you could let those dry and they'd burn like firewood! 🤣
Been cleaning out and drying out the last of the chicken coops today. Everything here is still sodden and messy, but it's slowly drying today. Planning on putting the plastic over the livestock panel hoop house tomorrow. It's so warm we want to wait as long as we can. Got my cuttings of sweet potato to root and keep indoors so I'll have slips for sure next year, even though I'm also going to try keeping some in the hoop house over winter. Just some extra insurance for me. Made room indoors (and away from the cats!) for the tropical things that just can't take even temps below 40. Stored some extra ginger roots to overwinter in cool sand. Got a few more of my driest okra pods clipped off for next year's seed. Harvesting the last tomatoes and peppers tomorrow too, except for the couple going into the hoop house. I also had some potatoes volunteer in a grow bag but I had already planted carrots in it before the leaves popped. I guess we'll see what happens there. My winter root crops (carrots, beets, rutabagas, carrots, turnips) are all doing well, sewn in their 200-gallon tubs in the hoop house several weeks ago. I've sewn two batches of each about three weeks or so apart, so far, and planning on another one or two every two to three weeks.
My little Jilly Bean pepper plants seem to be almost ready as an open pollinated variety, fairly well stabilized and consistent for color, size and taste. I want to get another couple of generations under my belt before I call it done. Before Fall next year! They took me a little longer than I had figured they would, but I think they are going to be worth it.
I think my compost pile is almost as big as yours this year! Chickens on deep litter. It's magic!
You look like you feel better. That makes my heart glad. Love and hugs to you, Greg, and Pops.
Blessings ❤️
Great little potato harvest & That's a very impressive okra stalk. 🌱
Potatoes looking good Jill ❤ I have a few more weeks till I pull my potatoes
Nice taters! Southern Oregon had an early snow two days ago. We got several inches. It was a wet snow and brought down some huge branches from our oak grove. Luckily none of the branches landed on our fences or hurt anyone. I got a tiny patch of algae in my greenhouse so I need to get that out. Otherwise things are fine. Guess I need to water less. It's very humid. We got several loads of new dirt too. And sitting on 4 yards of horse manure. Pure gold. : ) Frustrating today 90% of our state voted red yet the 10% won. It's just not right. We had the worse governor in the whole US, and now in for another pos. Ugh! Hope Texas had better luck, but I think were all in the same boat. God bless you!
A very nice potato harvest!
That’s one heck of an Okra stalk! Looks more like a tree trunk! Lol!
We are looking forward to the cooler temps. It signals the Christmas season getting closer! Have a blessed day!
Hey Jill nice little harvest of taters. That compost look real rich. Our heat is natural gas and the cost is much lower however we really don't use it much. I converted the fireplace to a vented gas and it's clean and warms the entire house. At night we just get under the covers like Little House on the Prairie. I'll get up early around 4:30am and light up the fire for Rochelle. Texas Energy is big mess. WOW that okra is magic! Thanks for the update. God Bless, Mike
Nice potato harvest Jill. ❤
First year growing okra for me and I also got okra TREES. Waiting on pods to dry out more to get them seeds!
I am praying for the same . I don't like the extreme heat but I definitely do NOT do winter . We cut down and pulled all the left over "summer" garden yesterday and I got two big ice cream buckets full of bell peppers, one of nadapenos , one of other peppers , one of tomatoes , along with the last of the cantaloupe and watermelons that were left . Unfortunately the melons would not have time to finish so I froze them to feed to my worm bins . We threw the vines from the melons to the chickens . My garden looks naked , except for the fall and winter beds . The rest went in compost bins outside . We also moved the chicken coop to its winter home to be better protected from the winter winds . I have to cover up a few things yet but I will have that done tomorrow .
We are suppose to get down to 29 tomorrow night here , it is 79 right now and feels good .
I have a couple of sweet potatoes planted in a tub inside my greenhouse. I thought I should plant the sweet potatoes to grow early slips for next spring. I thought I wouldn't get very many slips if I just planted slips. Maybe I should have just planted slips instead of the sweet potatoes. Or maybe plant both to see which way produces more slips.
