  1. I like the old school (and I mean from the old country old school) Italian Grub hoe, 5×8 or 8×8 with a short 3.5' handle. But those tools are definitely good for old people with back problems, etc.

Absolutly correct ,I have a serious back problem.With a short handle fork only can manage about three square meters but when I   replaced it with a long shovel handle now possible to dig around 25 sq meteres.Best money well spent ,It pays for it self in one day.Far far easier,now enjoyig the digging.Also I will mention that digging by fork is much easier than shovel as it easily goes down in stony soil and you not cutting up the lovly earth worms and fork does not need sharpening like spade.
