I have Rhode Island Reds, Black Astrolops and mutts. I try to let my girls hatch out several clutches every spring. We then process the oldest hens and any roosters.

I have 4 chickens: a barred rock, a buff Orpington, RIR, Brahma. They just started laying a month ago. They roam our backyard happily eating bugs and keep my grass mowed! They poop ALOT! Definitely should keep that in mind if you plan on raising them.
have read from farmers stating that the gov people from the usda or whoever it is that comes out, they just keep "testing" chickens/turkeys until they find a "positive result" and then kill all the birds. Doesn't matter if there are any birds that show any signs of being sick whatsoever. Its just one facet of the war on the food supply.

We used to free range our chickens, but with this bird flu hype, we made sure they had a coop where they wouldn't be exposed in any way to wild birds. Also, we had chicken hawks swooping down every once in a while, and decided enclosing their area was best.

Personally, I think the chicken thing is to keep people from being too self-sufficient. There is NO reason ALL chickens in a flock, no matter how small, should be killed because they "might" transmit it. Avian flues NEVER go away, it's like the common cold (SHOCK!! it's a bunch of different coronavirus strains!!) and the regular human flu, it's ALWAYS around, you can't prevent it other than good health because it's a living organism and always evolves. It's just like wanting people to register their personal backyard gardens.
It's not a conspiracy theory anymore, if it ever was one. The powers that be do NOT want ANYONE but them – the lawmakers – to be self-sufficient.
Buy all the chickens you can. Breed all you can. Fuck the authorities.

Remember, don’t let the usda idiots on your property. I would not trust them for an instant, and keep in mind that even if a bird tests positive (so they say) down the road at a farm, they’ll come to your nearby house and kill your birds too. Look it up- I remember reading about what they did in CA during a supposed flu outbreak. They killed parrots and other ppl’s pet birds.
Also, if you can’t get chicks, then buy an incubator and someone in your area can sell you fertile eggs. Study incubation, be sure to do it right, and most importantly, regardless of the end-purpose of your birds, treat them well. It’s our responsibility as animal owners.
Austrolorps make large eggs but ASE Browns lay daily. Add black oil sunflower seeds to their diet to make your eggs more beneficial.

This year we focused on variety in egg shell color but next year we are hoping to focus more on production. (I have roosters so we can always hatch our own.) If we are able to purchase more, the breeds I'm going for are: Isa Browns (Tractor Supply) bc they consistently lay a lot of large eggs, Bresse to hatch meat birds, and dual purpose: Barred Rock, Jersey Giants, maybe Orpingtons. (My lavender Orpingtons lay the smallest pinkish eggs. Not impressed.)
I would also raise Cornish Cross if we are able to purchase chicks next year. Otherwise I'll separate my large/dual purpose breed hens and stick them with my barred rock Rooster.
I have Novogen brown hens and roosters. They are hands down the best chickens I have ever had!!!! Very friendly, not a mean bone in them not even the roosters, great feed to egg ratio, I have a few that lay 2 eggs a day. But unfortunately I lost my chickens to a horrible boating accident.
Do cows also get "bird flu"????? Why are they killing cows? Seems for no reason. Is the World Government causing starvation on purpose ???

I have Buff Orphingtons and Red Stars. This is my first year with chickens. We just started to get eggs last week. This spring I will be getting some more chicks and some other varieties.
Anytime the government asks for permission to do something (search your car, enter your property, etc) they are acknowledging that they don't have the legal authority to do it without your permission. They can go pound sand, as far as I'm concerned!

We live in the New Mexico mountains and so far I love buff Orpingtons. They are dual purpose bird and have always gone broody. They do very well in our hot summers and bitter cold winters. They also are good foragers.

We started with layers in a small town in Ohio this summer. eight hens, one rooster. We averaged 6 eggs/day until recent seasonal change and down to 4 eggs/day. 5 Isa Browns, 2 Americaunas, 1 Sapphire Splash and the rooster is a silver laced Wyandotte. We live on the edge of town bordered by farm fields. We have not had a boating accident yet, but the Coast Guard is keeping an eye on us. Watching for illegal immigrants I suppose.
