  1. Very informative, thank you for the video… I am trying to plant a garden in the desert of Southeastern California, wish me luck and a green thumb… Happy trails💜

  2. Thanks John, we're moving to the southwest and need to grow greens and common veggies. I hope you heal fast and have a happy New Year.

  3. I am about to move for Maine to Palm Springs California and I want to God and even though I am in an electric wheelchair and disabled. I have 43 hours per week of Home Health Care and they can help me with a Garden. It is very different than growing a garden in Maine and I understand a lot of that do to friends in one of the Valley's which is extremely hot and arid. here I had somebody make me some raised beds up to my waist and I am 6 feet tall so that myself and my helper didn't have to get down on the ground because I cannot do that my spine is broken from my neck all the way down through my tailbone. The vertebrae are all cracked and that's just one of a million other things that I deal with and I don't talk a lot about. Could I use a raised bed like that if it's deep enough and long enough as well as wide enough? The two I had built here were humongous!

  4. Are you in AZ?? Our winter garden has been doing great. We're just North of Phx @ the 2000' mark. But, our Summer garden was seriously stressed. The okra were stunted. Any tips? I love okra..

  5. I was surprised to learn that dino kale can take the heat because it comes from italy and the red russian is from a colder climate. I planted both this fall and to my surprise the dino kale did best here in zone 8 with a few light frosts.Weird I think

  6. I just got into gardening. I live in Las Vegas but the only place I have to garden is on a patio with indirect light. DO you think my vegetables will do ok or should I not grow until I move?

  7. His top crops; Thai basil, okra, eggplant, black kale, ruberob (sp?) spinach, swiss chard, purple tree collards,

  8. We have a large raised bed veg garden in the So. Cal desert [Palm Springs]. Each year I explore with different plants to see how they will do. We have had a very hot Spring this year – was 110 f yesterday – on May 8th. This year I planted one artichoke in February. It has grown to about 4' w X 4" tall – with some side shoots. We have picked over 40 chokes so far, with a few smaller ones still coming. Crazy! We were shocked how well this did, and how productive too. Really enjoy your channel.

  9. Hello my dear thank you for sharing your wonderful video liked.. heres my gift for you ring your bell to see you

  10. Wonder what to PLANT in July, in the Sonoran Desert/Tucson area. I have hydroponics as well as dirt garden

  11. I like his list, but here in the desert, here's my list based off EXPERIENCE that will survive extreme hot and cold…

Okra-YESSSS!!! Okra is super hardy plant that will take OUR LAS VEGAS SUN!!! But, it has to be well established! keep an eye on the leaves, if it wilts by noon time, put a shade at least 5' above it. when it's about 2 feet tall, it can take all the sun can throw at it…

Eggplant-This will do great during winter and summer. But during the hottest part of summer, it will wilt (based on my experience). Morning sun and afternoon shade and it will give you plenty of massive fruits

Swiss Chard-I can attest to this that it will survive our winter and summer. it will shoot out tons of leaves on cooler days, but shade it for afternoon sun during summer.

malabar spinach will survive summer, but will die in the winter. Have it growing in pots and move it in the garage when winter comes… I tried growing it outside for 2 years, it just keeps dying even when I cover it during winter.

Kale-ing It!!!-I agree with kale!!! I had two grew side by side with collard greens to about 2 feet tall!!! If it wasn't for the damn caterpillars, it would have kept on growing!!!

I can't believe John completely forgot about COLLARD GREENS!!! Collard greens is another vegetable plant that can take a beating with our LAS VEGAS SUN and will take it like a champ!!! I had two growing for 2 summers, I had no idea why it did not shoot flowers last year! but it grew to 4 feet tall!!! I had so much leaves I had to share it with my neighbor. I harvested thousands of seeds and hundreds fell on the soil and now, I have a lot of volunteers growing!!!

lastly but not the least, the ever UNPOPULAR most commonly known as a WEED, the DANDELION… Dandelion really gets no love… I mean you can eat the whole plant really… it will survive the cold and extreme hot like no other… but no love for this delicious and nutritious vegetable… 🙁

  12. A friend of mine in Hawaii grows long narrow Asian eggplant. And most eggplants live for 5-7 years.
