Winter Sowing and Planting in our No Dig Garden – Gardening in Portugal

It’s Autumn in the veg garden and it’s time for a tidy up and a refresh of the beds ahead of some winter seed sowing and planting. We’ve got a lot growing already but we’ve got some garden chores to do as we prepare for the winter.

Join us for a selection of gardening bits and pieces and a trip to one of our favourite garden centres here in Portugal.

  1. Have you thought of doing any hanging gardens with a watering system that way you could use the vertical for lettuces or strawberries or herbs and then have the alliums and the root vegetables in the ground

  2. Watering system is a bit intense, pipes everywhere. Home made Olla clay pots sunk in the ground every so often and using capillary action into the soil means pots only filled with water once a fortnight….irrigation sorted.

  3. Envious that you are able to plant anything this time of year. And the variety and just the abundance available is fabulous! ❄️🇨🇦❄️ Enjoy 👍🏻

  4. Just a heads up peppers are perennials in some zones, I am in Northern California zone 10a which I believe is similar to your climate and I grow my pepper plants as such and get great yields year over year. You may want to give it a try. Love your videos very informative and inspiring.

  5. You have sieve the soil almost to sand texture otherwise they don't grow straight or even no straight ..good luck !!!.

  6. I love your videos. You explain things very well and have many great ideas. They’re also an inspiration and a roadmap for smaller channels like myself to want to continue and create better content to grow like your channel. Thanks again -OMG

  7. You can sow leeks in clusters of 3. I pull the larger ones when still small and use in lieu of spring onions.

    6. Couve coração

    16. Cenoura

I hope it helps you! You are doing great especially considering how complicated Portuguese can be.

  9. Hello guys 🙂 where do you buy your compost? I too do not have a great home made compost, so i would like to balance it out. Thank you in advance 🙂

  10. Do you even have winter where you are? Winter sowing in 22deg. C is hardly winter LOL.

  11. Yes Kylie, bit slow on the "byeee". Love watching your stuff. I'm keen to see what you do with the "couves" and what your take on it will be. Love your stuff.

  12. Use a pencil rather than marker – marker sun bleaches & washes off with the rain. Permanent marker included.

  13. In the winter months i cut back my pepper and chilli plants. so they start producing new side shoot for next year crop. and this is my third year at doing this method and its working well. i just cover the plants and keep a watch over them i cover them with fleece to add a bit of warmth

  14. Hello to you both. In Australia as you may know we use sugar cane mulch for between gardens for walkways !!!

  15. HELLO KYLIE & GUY…YOUR METICULOUS ATTENTION TO DETAIL HAS BROUGHT YOU NOT ONLY A BOUNTY, BUT, TAUGHT MANY WHO VIEW SKILLS THAT THEY CAN USE IN THEIR OWN SITUATIONS…YOU HAVE, ESSENTIALLY, BECOME TEACHERS OF AGRICULTURE…AS OTHERS HAVE STATED, IT IS A BLESSING TO BE IN A PLACE THAT YOU CAN GROW A GARDEN YEAR ROUND…THANKYOU FOR SHARING ALL THE THINGS YOU HAVE LEARNED BY TRIAL & ERROR, MUCH APPRECIATED…🙏🏻;)

  16. Enjoyed watching that. My cat also nibbles on all kinds of stuff, not sure why as she has lots of grass to eat, gourmet cats maybe ;-)) – when I take out plants like the aubergine, I cut them off at ground level and leave the roots to decompose in and feed the soil organisms, tip from Charles Dowding.

  17. Your portuguese accent is improving so much, well done!! The word couve is a tricky one to know the gender, because it doesn't end with "o" (male) or "a" (female). It's one of those words the you just need to memorise the gender and it's a female word, which means if you write an adjective after the noun couve you need to write it ending with and "a". So it will be couve roxa.
    Chard is acelga. 😊😊😊

  18. Hi!! Did you come to Viseu? I never went to that garden center but I liked what I saw. There's another one in Viso, Criaverde, I think. You are doing such wonderful job in you farm 🙂 And your portuguese is goog!

  19. how do you know what's a weed and what is just seeds from the plants you want to grow just naturally dropping? I realised in my own garden I was pulling out heaps of veolias and pansies which had naturally seeded! Thought they were random weeds.

  20. Veg patch looking great. My favourite videos are the garden ones as veg growing is my passion. Be very interested to see if carrot plugs work. The two things I've always sown direct are carrots and parsnips.

  21. When garden season starts all depends on where you live. Winter sowing on latitude 60 wouldnt work very well for sure.

And as an edit, 45 minutes is extremely local aroung here. Anyhting under 2-3 hours roundtrip is considered next door… 😉 And red onions is an absolute must! Do NOT miss out on those.

  22. Love your relaxed attitude and methodical approach! just a fyi don't stand on your no dig beds and a lot of the annual salads etc you can just cut at ground level and let the roots break down and open up the soil. This is also the best option for legumes as they fix nitrogen from the air on their roots, so leaving them is more beneficial. Keep up the good work! much <3
