I Grew Winter Wheat For The First Time

#gardening #bread #diy

The wheat variety I will be growing is a Soft Red Winter Wheat. Winter wheats are really cool. They start out their growth in the early to middle of autumn, lie dormant in the winter, and then come spring grow like a rocket. They should be ready to harvest in the late spring or early summer. The advantage of this growing cycle is self evident: I can grow 2 crops on 1 field AND I can use an otherwise useless field over the winter.

Wheat is the oldest food crop we as humans have ever cultivated. You don’t hardly see many gardeners grow wheat in their backyards, I’m not sure why, but that’s the truth. With this project I hope to prove that even a tiny patch, like I have, can yield meaningful amounts of grain, and eventually flour.

This is my first long term project that I’ll be sharing with YouTube. This is the first of a 3 part series with the end goal of baking a loaf of bread.
