SUPER EASY Hay Bale Raised Bed Gardening Ideas / Front Yard Garden Growing Lettuce Greens Salad Bar Zone 5
How to grow lettuce… super easy gardening idea for instant lettuce raised bed.

Salads are one of our favorite appetizers, and what could be better than walking outside on a fall day and heading over to your oasis of a salad bar, right there in the front yarden and picking a fresh and delicious salad right out of the hay bale.

This year we are growing some of our food in hay bales, for the first time ever. This hay bale has been fertilized, and we have added some potting mix to it, and now our salad greens are growing so quickly!

Initially, we planted squash in this bale, and while the plant looked good for a while, it never really produced much fruit. One of the main reasons for this is that we did not prepare the bale well enough, as it was a first year hay bale.

We learned, over the course of this season, that the initial treatment of the bale/bale preparation is essential to seeing growing success. So, we added more fertilizer and more potting soil to the bale before we planted these salad greens, and the results are clear. They love this spot to grow in. And as a bonus, the rabbits can’t reach the veggies.

And, because we are now one season in with this bale, we will be able to grow root crops in it next year, much more easily.

We hope you enjoy and are inspired by the creativity of growing in a bale of hay, and maybe give it a try on your own.

We hope you enjoy!

  1. Great salad bar. I tried a hay bale once for a tomato ๐Ÿ…. It was a disaster. But I can't grow veggies anyway!

  2. Great video. We will have to try this. We have a bunch of 'aged' bales kicking around. We do not have a lot of luck with lettuce.

  3. I really the idea of growing in a Straw Bale /Hay Bale
The purple mustard is a beautiful veggie …
    I just ordered some radishes
Great information as always … Thank you

  4. Was it hay or straw though? My guess since all you grew was lettuce is that it was straw ๐Ÿ˜ last year my friend offered to bring me home โ€œstraw balesโ€ and it was definitely more hay then straw. Sprouted everywhere.

  5. Nice salad there. Very good selection. Not sure if you have seen CBs Greenhouse and gardens channel but they do hay bale gardening also. Great information! Thanks for sharing the video!

  6. That is an interesting idea my friend and I've seen a number of folks use similar techniques. But if I put a bale of hay on my ground it will instantly become a fire ant motel. Nice salad though.

  7. Looking good! I left home for a few weeks. Don't know what I'll come home to. My papaya & mango plants were brought into the shower, but the lettuces and sweet potatoes were left outside. Looking forward to seeing how they did when I get back.
