5 Tips For Back Garden Chickens UK

Here are our 5 tips for keeping back garden chickens in the UK. We love having our back garden chickens and cannot imagine being without them. They give us more than just good quality eggs as we find them entertaining and fun to have around.

Keeping your own chickens does require some thought as they will need to be looked after well. Happy chickens will reward you with eggs and few problems.

1. A great help when you are keeping back garden chickens is a good book. We have the Haynes Chicken Manual https://amzn.to/3TFzXgD and would recommend it to anyone keeping back garden chickens in the UK.

2. Chickens will eat almost anything but for them to lay good eggs with a quality shell they will need a good quality feed. We use layers pellets https://amzn.to/3eGWQSp as their main feed and give them corn or garden scraps as a treat.

3. It is possible for you chickens to get worms and we treat ours during the winter months with Flubenvet feed substitute https://amzn.to/3go4EZE We simply give them this as instructed on the packet instead of their normal layers pellets.

4. It is normal for chickens to get small mites on them and in particular red spider mite. We use Diatomaceous Earth https://amzn.to/3TAKFVJ to dust around the house and their egg boxes. This will prevent or cure an infestation of mites. We found red spider mite very difficult to get rid of until we used this diatomaceous earth.

5. Since we lost our chickens to a fox we have been careful to shut them away each night. This Titan automatic door https://amzn.to/3CMNTyU makes the job very easy. It can be programmed to open and close a particular times so that the hens can be safe at night. Chickens will take themselves to bed when the day starts getting dark.

  1. Thank you for the information. The Diatomaceous Earth is expensive – but worth every penny. Befriend local resteraunts. Get them to save oyster type shells. Super fine crush and add to their feed like you would add salt to your dinner. Helps digestion and creates more robust egg shells. I take their feed to them in the same white bucket. They soon learn: white bucket = food and will run towards you. Can then see anything wrong with any individual.

  2. I know it’s not relevant to this video, I saw a post from you on Facebook earlier with a pumpkin soup recipe, but cannot find it now. Will it be added to You Tube please as would be interested in it. Many thanks

  3. Great video I didn’t know you could get worming layers pellets this is something I will introduce now thank you
